Is there any way to clear out app data without having to do a restore?

Basically I went through the usage section on my iPod touch and found that the twitter app was hogging over 4GB with a few others hitting high levels of data bloating (I only had 1.8GB left) and I thought that just removing the app and reinstalling it would help, but I must have screwed it up when moving the app into it's regular place and it stalled during installation and I thought that shutting it down and starting it back up would help (it had in the past) but it made things worse as it stayed at the apple logo when I turned it back on, however I managed to salvage things by getting it into DFU mode and restoring it from a 7 month old backup (at the cost of several photos, some of which I won't be able to get a hold of again) which brought it back to life and with a bit of clearing out, I managed to get back to over 14GB available.

So, is there a way to clear out the data used by apps, or should I just do a backup and restore every once in a while.
