I have just been watching QVC :p and There was a external hard drive on there that is just plug in and automatic backups by itself without needing software or telling it what to do. Now this sounds perfect for my dad who is pretty computer illiterate and has lost many files in the past and had not backed them up .So OCUK is there any software out there I can "install" onto a external I have lying around so like the clickfree you just plug in and leave to do backup for you without having to do anything.

i thought most external hard drives have an automatic back up feature, although i maybe wrong about this! i think my WD passport has the function, but im not entirely sure. Perhaps someone else will be of better help than me

There are a number of free apps around.

I use Second Copy which you may have to pay for.
It allows running 'profiles' on startup as well as shutdown.
It can create [incremental] archives which suits me but may be more than you need.

They all tend to require some relatively simple setting up.

Essential software to my mind.

You could google 'free backup software' although you should get some feedback here on users' experience.
