Hi, Ive got a XFX 450 Pro which has a clicking noise and is NOT the fan as I stopped it, I thought I saw a burst cap with stuff leaking out but when I checked a video online of someone with the same issue it turns out to be some sort of glue

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XwESO5dcFlA

I cant remember where I bought it but it is only 2-3 years old and I filled out the 5yr warranty and sent it off (I still have the box)

should I purchase a new one and if so can anyone recommend a decent one>?

my system is an Ivy Bridge i5 with 2 x HDD's 1 x SSD a Gigabyte GTX 650 & a DVDRW running on a Gigabyte Motherboard

the clicking comes and goes

thanks

Well if it's under a 5yr warranty get on to XFX and get a replacement unit ?

I'm not sure if there is even an XFX rep on here , which would be a help

Hi

thanks for your reply

Ive submitted a ticket and found the seller and submitted a ticket to them as ive read thats what XFX tell you to do...it means I would be without my PC for ages and still would have to buy one as I use it every day for hours...

so can anyone recommend a decent PSU just to be on the safe side?

the clicking has stopped ...for now... seems to be intermittent....or does it for a while then stops

The RMA may take a while and it's always handy to have a spare PSU for troubleshooting. Couple of PSU options for you:

Superflower HX450W:

Antec Truepower Classic 550W:
https://www.overclockers.co.uk/antec-truepower-classic-550w-80-plus-gold-power-supply-ca-202-an.html

thanks, never heard of superflower but know Antec are good so may go for that one

are corsairs any good anymore?

The XFX 450 I have is Seasonic built and theyre supposed to be one of the best PSU builders around :(

..seem to be mixed reviews on that particular Antec, may case is midi sized and struggled with cable storage on that, i may consider a modular unit

The Antec unit is a seasonic design and has good internals. So does the Superflower. If you need a modular unit, then the EVGA GS 550W, G2 550W and XFX XTR 550W are good choices.

The GS and XTR series are Seasonic units, the G2s are Superflower units.

Superflower and Seasonic are both very good OEMs but with any product, you do get those which either arrive DOA or develop a fault.

Corsair do make some good units (RM, HX, AX series), but they are expensive and compete at the same price point as Superflower/EVGA etc. The cheaper units (VS and CX series) have cheaper internals compared to an equivalent unit from say Superflower or Seasonic.

If you're pressed for space, the EVGA GS 550W is a very good choice - it's small and fully modular. I have one of these in a m-ATX case and it is definitely more compact than some other units.

Many thanks for your in depth reply :)

Its funny how I already had a decent Seasonic 80+ Bronze PSU with Jap Caps and its dying after 3 years, always kept the unit clean of dust...bugger...thought it might of lasted longer than that if they were offering 5 year GT on it, wonder if they would send me a replacement out first? unlikely - just means ive got to pay £50+ for another unit while its away for repair

...ive just read an in depth review (about mine) on JohnnyGuru thats states it doesnt have DC to DC for 3.5v and 5v in it as advertised, and the Jap Caps are supposedly different ones that arent as good...they (XFX) have basically lied in the marketing/advertising - slightly high 12v rail too

its supposedly a Seasonic SS12II slightly modified for XFX

The bronze-rated units do tend to be not quite as good internally. Chemi-con caps are good though, it's just that this unit has been advertised as having features it doesn't.

The more recent XFX units are better though - until recently OCUK didn't stock any XFX products due to poor customer support from XFX.

such as what features?

thanks for your help aswell..really appreciate it, that Antec unit is looking like the one im going to go for, simply cant afford £70 for modular

after my experience with XFX I think I will stay away from them

would you recommend a gold+ unit only? I saw a Seasonic 430ST 80+ for around £40

By features, I meant the missing DC to DC for 3.3V and 5V and the capacitors that were not "Conductive Polymer Aluminum Solid Electrolytic Capacitors".

I generally recommend gold units because they tend to have decent quality components. If it's just going to be a spare whilst your PSU is being returned under warranty, then that budget Seasonic unit would be fine.

The Antec units though are rock-solid reliable units. Here's a review of the Truepower 750W - it's just a higher wattage version of the one I recommended.

OK thanks for the advice , i really do appreciate it, im going keep an eye on this one and also see whats in my local PC store but I'll probs get that Antec

thanks again

reply from XFX...total con off IMO

Dear sir

For the psu fault, the only way will be RMA.

As the reseller's cover period has been passed, you can only deal with us directly.

Here is our offer.

Please consider that you need to pay the forward shippment cost from your country to our warehouse in Netherlands.

Moreover, if there is any customs or taxes charged by your local country, you will need to afford. (may be up to 50 to 100 euros)

The below is the details of RMA procedures.

You send the card or psu to our warehouse in Netherlands.
Once we confirm that your psu has been arrived to Netherlands, we will contact the factory to prepare the replacement in China.
Then the replacement will be transfer to Hong Kong.
Finally, the replacement will be delivered to your address provided directly from Hong Kong

It usually takes 1 month or more to complete.

I understand it is not familiar but it is the only offer I can give.

Best regards

Wade

Actually, that's a pretty standard response although most RMAs take up to 28 days.

You do have to ship it to the RMA centre at your own cost. With PSUs, this can be expensive. However I'm a bit surprised about the customs charges bit. Having never had to RMA something abroad though, I wouldn't know. All my previous RMAs have been either direct with OCUK or a UK based returns centre (Crucial memory).

I assume the seller wasn't OCUK then?
