I still need to open up the case, but anyway... the clicking starts up when coming out of sleep mode and will stop once the gpu is 46c, so I'm a bit confused as I had thought it would have been the bearings on one of the fans that was the problem and that fan needing to be replaced, but why would it stop clicking once the pc heated up?

:(

I've had a failed clicking drive that didn't always click. You're in the best position to solve this. Open the case and see where it's coming from.

Depending on drive you have. I would run Seagate tools or WD Data Lifeguard Diagnostic tests. Saving you from opening up the PC if the HDD isn't clicking.

It could be something catching on the fan. When a fan first starts up the slow rotation makes the fan spin a slightly bigger arc and as it gets faster the arc tightens and becomes more central.

I had the same thing with my GTX 780 it was really annoying. There was a cable just nudging the fan so at slow speed it hit the cable but as the fan got faster it became more centrally balanced and just missed the cable. Could be something like that.

You really need to open the case and stick your ear in.

Careful indeed.

Once did this in my youth to hear where that funny sound was coming from.

PSU blew up in my face

Brown pants moment :p

Same thing happened to me once. It was indeed a brown pants moment.

On note of the topic, I had this and it was the fan. I have one of them shallow offerings and when tightened up too much it would warp it and cause it to hit at low RPM. Once the case is warm it inevitably sped up and stopped clicking.

OK..

Fan died on the cpu stock cooler.. :(

Such an old system, but as I don't want to upgrade this one (will be buying a newer one later), I'm trying to find a new cooler (stock; anything) to take care of the E7400 on mobo Asus P5QL....

Suggestions?
