can anyone point me in the direction of the best client prog to download from newsgroups ..free preferably ......cheers

mozilla thunderbird is free, but i dont use it, prefer to use NewsbinPro or Newsleecher both are not free but "can" be found on newsgroups

However, if you're are giganews user, you get a free newsleecher licence :)

sorry for the newb questions but i have just started using this..............right i have downloaded a client newsleecher.....how do i just do a general search or do you have to download the headers for every server you subscribe to or can you just do genral search in giganews for the files i am looking for

You have Giganews and Newsleecher...i hope you have the supersearch feature too? One of the tabs in Newsleecher. Just put in your search in there.

So how many things do you need to subcribe to for these?

Usenet giganews are news servers? then you need a downloader

I've tried them all, and the best for text newsgroups IMO is 'Turnpike'. (Does not work in Vista last time I looked). For binaries I've found nothing to compare with 'News Rover'.

Non of these are free, but well worth it if you spend a lot of time in newsgroups.

Giganews - Server - monthly sub
NewZbin - Search for NZBS - like 2 quid for 8 weeks
Newsbin pro - programe used for downloading - one off price for purchase

All of these are all you need.

Well i signed up for a 3 day trial to usenetserver. I opend grabit and typed the hostname as secure.usenetserver.com, put my password and useername in.

Tried updating some newsgroupe but just says can't connect :o

Edit - GrabIt does not support SSL connections at the moment. It has been added to the current development build and is currently being tested.
