I've just dug out my CPDN account and installed BOINC on my little Mac Mini that doubles as my media and development box. All linked to the OCUK CPDN team..

Only 2.66GHz C2D, 4GB DDR3 attached to a 110W power brick so in short it shouldn't be too OTT on power consumption.

I would have used the MBP previously but mine has the bump-gate GPU which would unsolder itself if it gets too hot..

Woot! Almost completed the two UK Met Office HasSM3 Slab Model 6.09s started on the 4th! Recent average credit is 875.30.

Both are approx: Elapsed 217:32:40. Progress 99.193%. To completion 01:45:39 ...

Interesting it's already queued up the next two work units but of different types:
HADAM3P 6.14 - expected time to complete is 76:36:45.
HADSM3D 6.04 - expected time to complete is 209:30:06 (same as the two about to complete).

They completed at 1am. Each model got a total of 7,100ish credit. So that's ~710 credit per model/day or 1,420 for the host/day.

I remember back in the say (2005ish) when they brought out sulphur models - I think it took a month of 24/7 CPU time on my old computer.

Don't doubt it, but they still feed the National Grid like everyone else - so your electricity won't be any greener than your neighbour on the cheapskate tariff.

As a Generator roll within the deregulated electricity market they will produce electricity onto the grid. Any distributor can then buy the electricity from any source every 30 minutes.

Generators can (and do) have times of shortfall and over generation (especially wind powered and hydroelectric). That slack is covered by other generators on the grid.
