Wonder if any of you guys know the answer to this. A mate has an 11 plate clio, and im looking at buying a Renault Clio 1.2 16V EXPRESSION 3DR (2006). Its got about 69k miles on the clock and he's told me ill probably need the cambelt doing (assuming the guy I'm buying it off hasn't already done it).

How much in parts and labour would this cost usually? I'll haggle the seller the cost of a replacement off the price if its worth the cost.

Cheers :)

Should have already been done as its overdue by a year now, its 72k or 5 years. Cheap to do on a D4F though would probably cost around £300 at an independant, make sure the water pump is changed too though they are made of chocolate and leak for fun.

I thought it was like £500-800 for the Clio timing belt for some reason..
This. At a dealer it's the upper end of that scale.

The reason is the engine has to be partially dropped out to allow enough room, it's a ~6hour job.

I don't think I had much change from £800 from the Renault dealership* after it and the service were done.

*We don't normally go to the dealer, but they were the only place that could give me a definite price for the job, everyone else knew it was a pig of a job and would only give a rough range

On a 172/182 at a dealer maybe, even those are circa 500 at a good specialist.

You've been lied too i'm afraid, lots of room to change the timing belt on a 1.2 16v lump, its a two hour jobs tops for someone who has done it before.

Even a 172/182 isn't really much longer once you've done a few.

(and yes this is experience talking)

Fair enough. I'd read up on it on a few forums and there seemed to be enough people saying the same thing that I accepted it.

Whether it makes any difference ours is a 56' 1.4 Dynamique

I have seen quotes from the dealership for 800ish, then people say it can be a DIY job if you are that way inclined. I'm no stranger to a socket set, but I'd rather save the hassle and just pay someone to do it for me.

It could be that the belt has been replaced, going to have a look at it tomorrow. Fingers crossed it has, but if not I'll be in a position to haggle to the right amount

Cheers all!

Recently did a cambelt on a clio, should take less than 2 hours if you know what your doing.

This.

I've recently had the waterpump, belt and tension done on my Clio (1.2 16v) - £200 and it didn't take him all that long.

make sure the water pump is changed too though they are made of chocolate and leak for fun.

Indeed. The belt was done on mine shortly before I bought it, but (surprise surprise) the dealer didn't do the pump as well - 6 months later, drip drip drip and the whole lot had to come off again!
