I am looking to purchase a 2001-3 1.6 or 1.4 flavour of these for under £2k, anything to watch out for, I used to own a renaultsport one of them, so I know what to expect re: dodgy rattly interior, anything else to watch out for, are they a good buy?

Or can anyone suggest alternative vehicles in a similar price bracket?

Yeah get a Focus instead.

Cambelt change at around 70k miles, if it hasn't been done then you'll be looking at roughly £130 to have it done.

If you can check, often the wiring loom box under the bonnet near the dash can come loose and fray and break the wire covers, resulting in a load of hideous electronic issues that are hard to trace unless you know it's that. There is a fix that's done to keep it in place by Renault often. Might be worth a check that it's not already bad. Also had the ECU go in one, no idea why yet but it seems the electronics (as expected) are a weak point in these cars, so check everything you can electronics-wise is working consistently.

Sunroof leaks is the other thing that comes to mind. Check the headliner and seats for evidence of water ingress.
