For a change it's not coming from the cabin :p

At around 3k rpm and above I can hear a tinkling coming from the engine, now I'm pretty sure that when I got the car I never used to hear it.

I've tried coasting and the noise goes away so it's deffinately something to do with the engine, again this can be proven by revving it in neutral. It's especially audible when going down a road with parked cars either side or walls and it's beginning to bother me.

Has anyone any idea what it could be, or any steps I could take to work it out for myself? (bearing in mind I'm a complete car noob).

do you own a 172/182? im sure theres a 3k rattle on them which is something to do with the exhaust.

If its a renaultsport it'll be the 4k rattle, needs a new exhaust centre section.

If its not probably something similar, best to chuck a post up on cs someone will be able to help you out.
 
I have a Fiat Punto and got the same problem. (sporting 3dr 2000 W reg)

My rattle sounds kicks in at 2500rpm

Started after cambelt was changed. Garage have checked and find nothing wrong.

Been driving the car with the rattle for a few months now with no problems.
 
Another vite for the exhaust :p

My ZX does it too, the heat shield rattles around the centre section and around the downpipe..

Get a garage to check it over (if you can be bothered to lie under it yourself) and give everythin a wiggle (when its cold, obv ;) )

NA its probably the engine trying to find some power from somewhere :D :D

Er could be something loose in the enginebay or under the car. If its only a rattle then i wouldnt worry. If its under warranty you could only get it checked out.

thinking about it mate i have the same noise, not used my car for around 5 weeks so not heard it for a while but i have a silimar sort of noise from the engine bay, i avnt let it worry me lol

Mines a 51 plate 1.2 16v if that helps shed some light on what maybe a common problem?
 
A friend of mines 1.4 Sport does it at around 3000rpm too, he said it was the heatshield as well.
 
I drive a 1.2 16V and had the same rattle a few months back, and the cure was simple.

At the back of the engine there is a metal cover that protects the injection computer terminal from weather/my grubby little mits, and the cover had come loose. It just needed retightening. It is located between the engine block and the base of the windscreen, centrally and high up. Check it out.
