Clipped wing mirror

Hi guys,

I was driving home tonight after dropping off my boyfriend and I clipped someones wing mirror. My passenger side mirror snapped forward and smashed my mirror :(. I only live around the corner, so I drove home and grabbed my bike and cycled back to where the parked cars are. I had a look and I couldn't see any smashed or damaged wing mirrors, so I went back home. I can't just leave stuff like that (also, I'm also a road cyclist so I like to keep my road karma in good shape) and guilt got the better of me and I called 101 for advice. I wasn't sure which car I'd clipped, so I couldn't give them a reg number. I asked them to make a note that I had called, in case the person whose wing mirror I hit called the police, and I was given an incident number.

Was calling 101 and getting an incident number enough? I've read a few posts and a few people have been told to go to their local police station and report it in person.

Also, any idea how much it costs to replace the wing mirror on an Audi A3?

Very good of you to try your hardest to make sure anyone who came forward got your details bud. Hopefully wont cost you to much to fix :)

Not sure what car you hit were you also not paying attention when driving.

I was paying attention. It's a narrow road with parked cars on either side, and I was watching the car that was squeezing past going in the opposite direction. Couldn't stop immediately as it's a busy junction and would probably have caused another accident. Best I could do was park up at home (just around the corner) and go back to check all of the cars. If I had seen any damage I would have taken down the reg and passed it on to the police when I called to report it.

if its just the glass thats broken, you should be able to replace that quite cheaply.

Cool. I'll call a few local places tomorrow and get some prices. Wing mirror isn't dented or damaged, so it looks like I gave it a very glancing blow and it was just the wing mirror snapping back that caused the mirror to break.

IIRC you don't have to go to the police station, all you have to do is report the accident as soon as practicable or in any case within 24hours if you have not given your cars VRM, your name and address at the scene (and the owner's name and address if different). Since you've already done this all, you can sleep easy tonight :)

By calling 101 you are, in effect, reporting it to a police officer hence no need to go into the police station in person to report. If there was an injury I think this is different.

That's all I was worried about. I feel better knowing that if the person does call the police (for what ever reason) that he knows I haven't just driven off an not given it a second thought. Someone side swiped our car at Christmas and left a massive dent in the drivers side door and didn't leave any details. It was horrible to think that people just don't give a damn about other peoples property.

If it's not already clear, I'm a soft sod. I'd make an awful criminal

Hehe. Aww, thank you :)

Just been out to check the wing mirror and the electrics are still working. I was able to move it up and down and side to side with no problem, so I'm just hoping that it's just the glass that needs replacing and that it won't cost a fortune!

The police haven't come to haul me away, so I'm feeling confident that I didn't do any damage to the other persons car.

When my wife clouted a tree with her wing mirror, the glass was shattered. I bought a replacement directly from Honda and swapped it in no time at all :)

Scarp yard/... or partsgateway... try them. And nice one for reporting, this is the second honesty thread in a few days... nice to see.

My heated mirror from Audi was about £50 and it simply clipped in once you connect the heated elements in he back.

The mirror you hit may not of actually broke but I bet they'll be a coloured scuff mark on it.

Thanks for all the info. I was worried that it was going to cost a fortune, but you've all reassured me that it's not going to cost mega bucks. My boyfriend took a look at it this morning and said it should be easy enough to sort out.

The guy across the road does a lot of work on cars, so I might just buy the glass off ebay and see if he can help me fit it.

I'm utterly hopeless with mechanics and even I managed to replace a mirror myself, and that was a heated electric one. Shouldn't be too difficult, especially if its just the glass
