Clocking a Q6600

Greetings!

I'm pretty new to overclocking, so here I go. I have a few questions to ask, and I would love it if you guys could answer them for me.

1) How does clocking the voltage effect the CPU in comparison to just clocking the FSB and the multiplyers?
2) In your opinion, what would be a decent voltage to set my Q6600 at?

I have clocked it before, but I haven't dared to touch the voltage. I only ask because when I clock the FSB so the CPU reaches 3.0ghz, the PC just cuts out on me, won't even load up the OS! I can just about get into the BIOS, if I am quick enough. I take it this is down to a heating problem however, because as soon as I lift the side of my case off, it can run 3.0ghz easily.

Sorry if i've wasted your time in any way.

voltage increases are often required to give the chip some more 'juice' to play with. much like a motorway the more cars you have on it (higher clocks) the bigger you need to make it.. haha, sometimes you can get away with leaving it as is but highly unlikely without problems (again much like RL)

dont go above 1.4 is my advice. intel says 1.5 is the absolute max.

have you raised nb volts? if not thats one reason its failing, and also you will probably have to raise the cpu volts by a few notches.

have you run a cpu temperature test?

Thank you for clearing that up with me! Now I have a decent idea where I was going wrong. I have ran several CPU tests yes, @ 3.0ghz it was hitting 50*celsius. Again, thanks a lot!

@DarK Angel

I have no idea what stepping my CPU is, never heard that terminology/colloqualism before. I am using air cooling also.

Is it the retail HSF, or a 3rd party cooler.

Basically, is your CPU a G0? Try using CPUZ (it's free) and take a gander. It'll let you see your default Voltages, and so on.

*EDIT*

Also, I've noticed you say tests. I'm not sure what they are, but I'll assume they're at full load for a length of time? I'd recommend something like prime 95. Use Core Temp to give you a right idea of the temps.

(you might know this, but just throwing it out there)...

@DarK Angel

It is the retail HSF. Yeah I use software such as CPU-Z and Prime 95. Thank you for your help! Yes my Q6600 is a G0, and I found out my default is 1.15v (on avarage I believe).

@DarK Angel

I wouldn't mind pushing it to it's limits to be fair with you, after doing the stress test, I got 75*c when it was being utilised @ 2.4ghz. Would you suggest watercooling? I've thought about buying a watercooling kit for a long time.

Which motherboard are you using ? How good an overclock will also depend on what chipset that motherboard is. Also forget watercooling get a good air cooler or sealed water cooler. Building a water cooled pc from scratch is a headache if you are not good with building stuff and don't have patience..

Something like this

or if you really want water cooling in some form this..

dont go water, no need at the moment, you need to get good at overclocking before considering it really.
75c is a lot at 2.5 and not healthy - try reseating your cooler, giving fans etc a clean....asides from that buying a 3rd party cooler as above.

@Purgatory

Thankyou for the suggestions, I will definitely give that HSF some thought. However, my case is rather small so I would need to make sure it could fit into my case. Also, my chipset is G41.

@iamtheoneneo

Yeah, i'll probably clean out the PC sometime later today.

@Purgatory

I bought myself a decent thermal paste from OCUK a while ago when I took my fan off and reapplied some. Thanks though.

With the G41 chipset you will get a nice 3GHz overclock you may find with the G41 chipset there is a FSB wall you will hit after anywhere from 334-345 where the board will not go faster and will refuse to POST.

3.0GHz the Q6600 333 x 9 will work fine for sure :) seen some hit 3.2GHz too but at a struggle.

@Purgatory

Cheers for the advice! 333x9 is what I tried before, without knocking the voltage up at all. As soon as I get the spare cash, I think i'll invest in a better HSF.
