Hi guys this is the first time i'm going to try and clock my system and i'm looking for some advice on how to do so.

I've read the begginers guide which has helped me a fair bit. I would like to see 3.4ghz out of my CPU.

The only things i have changed in BIOS is my RAM voltage is 2.1 and i adjusted the CPU voltage to 1.15.

Spec is:

Q9550 2.83ghz
Freezer Extreme CPU cooler
OCZ 6400 DDR2 (2x2gb) - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showp...Low Latency Dual Channel DDR2 (OCZ2N800SR4GK)
Asus P5QE Motherboard

Here is some screenshots of everything at stock

Advice on anything that looks out of the ordinary and where i'm best off starting would be greatly appritiated.

well to start with i would put that cpu voltage up to 1.25v not gona get very far with only 1.15 on it. Once you have a stable overclock that your happy with then you get drop the voltage back down until it becomes unstable, and knock it back up a little.

3.4Ghz should be fairly straightforward to get. 400fsb ram at 1:1 8.55 multi = 3.4Ghz chip :)

Right i have done that and im getting temps of around 70

Thats a little too much for my liking

under 100% load

what volts are you at? seems alittle high temp wise for that clock my mate has the q9450 at 3.2 and hes got temps of 45deg on the stock cooler

1.25 it seems to run really warm. i managed to lower them to 1.2 but it started freezing 5mins into prime.

that temp does seem alittle high, what thermal paste did u use (and how much did you put on?) and are you running your cpu fan at 100% ?

Arctic silver 5...i have just re-applied the cooler and paste and at stock speed with 1.168v (CPUZ) i am getting tempuratures of 60 Degrees on 2 cores.

I've not been happy with these temps since day one.

I really want to get this CPU to 3.4/3.6 but i believe there is no chance with the tempuratures i am getting at stock speeds.

I'm not impressed with the cooler either

stock speed with 1.168v (CPUZ) i am getting tempuratures of 60 Degrees on 2 cores.

Looks a bit on the high side :(.

Am running @3.4 with temps at worst of 42c (real Temp)/47c Core Temp under 100% load.

My Spec.

Asus P5K Premium
Tuniq Tower (running half speed per dial)
4GB Corsair xms2 - running at 1066 - 2.1 volts /5.5.5.15
Cpu voltage 1.185 (I think) - per cpuz after vdrop/droop 1.168v
Settings in Bios otherwise on Auto

My Vid is a little less than yours 1.2375 - would not have thought that this was causing your increased temps BUT am not an expert and may be wrong.!!

Good air through the case ?

I have my 9550 at 3.5Ghz with a Tuniq Tower (just one fan). Peaks at about 67C in HWmonitor (Tmax adjusted for the 9550s). Make sure you are all reading the temps correctly! Another program I was using reported 5C lower (Coretemp I think).

When I get time I need to play about with the voltages. This chip can easily get to 3.8Ghz on air.

Good air through the case ?

Yes it very tidy inside me case.

I've just put another fan blowing air through the cooler see if that helps. might try another cpu cooler see if that helps.

I applied a pea size amount which the manual states so i guess ive applied the right amount?

A pea sized amount, isn't that what they recommend for toothpaste?

I think that much would ooze out all over your MB. You basically want a very fine film between your CPU and cooler plate.

applied a pea size amount

May be too much:(

You basically want a very fine film

Too true :D

If I remember correctly rather than pea size it should be grain of rice +/- size.

The link below might be of use to you

http://www.arcticsilver.com/pdf/appinstruct/as5/ins_as5_intel_quad_wcap.pdf

Personally I put a small blob in the centre , probably a little larger than a grain of rice , of the cpu heatspreader and then spread it,like very, very thin jam , over the the whole heatsreader.(Basic premise is as thin as possible covering over the whole BUT not over the edges - either inner or outer)

Others approach differently e.g. Arctic silvers rec.approach.

It's a matter of personal choice but 'more' is often not better !!

Sorry if lecturing :o Hopefully info will help

If its any help, ive got mine (spec below, similar to yours) at the following settings:

CPU vCore: 1.21
PLL: 1.54
FSB Term: 1.20
NB: 1.24

LLC: Enabled (1.19v idle, 1.20/1.21v load)

Noctua cooler on it, idles low 40's, highest has been 70 on cores1 and 2, 66 on cores 3 and 4 (IntelBurnTest). Prime95 runs at 2~4 degrees cooler. Not sure of the ambient room temp but toasty as heating is on full pelt! :D

Looks like i've applied to much thermal compund. I read a guide that said put much more on then that, i can't remember where i saw this now. I'll give it a try when i get in tonight and see if this helps. Thanks

Cheers sweeney look like a good clock. The Vcore is at a good voltage too.

What's the hottest you should run these CPU's at? 70 seems a bit high for what i let mine run at.

I have almost the same set up as you but not quie. Try the below

fsb 400
fsb strap auto
CPU vCore: 1.175
PLL: 1.56
CPU GTL ref 0/2 0.675
CPU GTL ref 1/3 0.675
FSB Term: 1.24
NB: 1.24
LLC Enabled other voltages leave on auto

Set your memory to 800 @ what ever voltage is recommened. Dont know if your mobo has the CPU GTL voltage options but if so use the above. Interesting link below that basically says the FSB Term should be higher than the vcore

http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=202292

Once you tried that up the FSB to 425, set the VCORE to 1.2375v and the FSB term to 1.26v and you should be sorted at 3.6GHZ.

Dont worry to much about the temps, my load temps are also around the 70-75 mark. Just out of curiosity what is your FPO/batch number?

Sorry cliffy don't have the box to hand for the CPU.

I'm just doing a pre overclock check and realtemp is reading 5 degrees lower on all cores than coretemp and speedfan (which are both reading the same).

What should i go by?

I'm just going to clean my cpu and re-apply the compound properly.
