Clone a APFS HDD to a SDD?

I've tried cloning a 500gb HDD to a 480gb SDD through disk utility but can't because it reports the target is too small.

I can't resize the source partition and even after creating a new container, effectively reducing the size of the partition I'm trying to clone by 30GB it still fails.

How can I do this?

Tried SuperDuper! ?

It does a file copy so should work.

Two options:

1. Use CCC
2. use rsync in terminal with the right command (maybe -a?).

Done it before multiple times.

CCC (CarbonCopyCloner) and SuperDuper! do the same thing. I tried both when I first got my Mac and preferred SuperDuper! but yes, either should work.
