Got a new laptop but I want to install a SSD instead of the HDD. I'm planning on cloning the HDD straight onto the SSD and then boot from the SSD. Am I right in thinking all I need to make sure it works is a recovery drive (USB as it has no disc drive)?

If you are attempting to backup with the built in system image tool then be very careful as it can be full blown aids. When you boot with the recovery drive you need to reassign drive letters manually via command prompt as otherwise it will try to restore the windows partition to the recovery drive and not the ssd.

If its 7 or 8 then upgrading to 10 (for the automatic activation against the supplied licence) then install 10 as a clean install with a format to ensure the manufacturer AIDs has been removed.

Already downloaded macrium reflect ready to go! It came with windows 10.

So my plan is to make a recovery USB using the tools on windows, then clone the HDD onto the SSD using Macrium reflect. Swap the drives, make sure the laptop boots from SSD and hope it works. If it doesn't then use the recovery USB to sort it out. Sound about right?

Disco P - anything else I can use?
