Closed back - £100 ish

Looking for some closed back headphones for around £100.00 for late night gaming / music. Apparently my HP200's can be heard across the house.

Now I expect the general consensus will be the same, so is there anything else apart from DT770's I should consider? I'm kind of missing the AKG sound I got from my Q701's and though I know I cannot get that kind of space with this budget, but are the K550 MK2's really not an option?

I agree with you but the missus would say otherwise. Believe me, it scares the crap out of me when I am chilling out late at night gaming and having her slapping my shoulder as she has gone to bed and can't sleep to the 'noise'.

I can hardly hear my speakers in the next room when I have a reasonable volume at night. I think even if I turned the volume right up on my headphones, I wouldn't hear a peep from them in the next room. If I had them on my head I'd either have a serious headache or be deaf. :p

If the closed headphones are not for main use, more just occasional use at night; paying £80 for the DT770's sounds like a good idea. HP150's are 2x the price from what I can see. Sure they are likely to be better than the 770's, but paying that kind of money would only make sense in my opinion, if you'd use them as equally as the HP200.

Interested to see how they listen. I am not expecting them to sound anywhere as good as my HP200's which I do love. Really underrated for the money.

I can always send them back or probably sell them for £80 and try the AKG's.

Not really liking the DT770's. They're going back and getting some AKG K550's to try instead.

Sold the HP200's as well (sigh). Can't see them getting much use as I only really use headphones at night. If I don't like the AKG's and going to up my budget, but there does not seem like any nailed on closed back options even for around £200.

I fancied a change, though already have sellers remorse. My mate who I sold them to just texted me to say they are like going from VHS to DVD (he has been using Klipsh Image Ones).

Take the Klipsch Image One that I bought for example, out of the box is was basically the worst headphone I've ever heard (it was muddy, and vocal sounded distanced), to the point that I wanted to chuck it into the bin! But after just a few hours of running it, it already started to open up and sounded noticably better, and after 20 hours, the mids and highs and the sound stage opened up much more, and it sound completely different to how it initially was (granted it is still a bass heavy set of headphone).

If you only gave the DT770 a quick try and think it sound aweful and tossed it aside, I would suggest you to may be leave it running overnight while you sleep, and listen to again in the next morning to see if it sounds any better before making your conclusion.

I still have them. I might give them another try. They just annoyed me straight away.

Too boomy and I thought the midrange was rubbish.

I know I am being rash, I am just in that kind of mood.

These are the new ones.

I'm liking them straight away. They fit my head well so have a good seal, the bass is tight and they are very analytical. Maybe the MK2's have fixed the issues some people found with the original ones, though I never had any so cannot compare.

I admit I was swayed by the What Hifi 2015 award and Tyll's video.

They sound nice to me as well, though they are really exposing minor glitches in recordings. Listening to London Grammar and you can hear all the pops and stuff in the recording.

I am also experiencing no lack of bass with these as some report. It is tight and goes very low. Might be the tweaks with the MK2. Only available in Richer Sounds as far as I can see, though they have upped the price by a tenner to £109.95.

Agree with the cable, but it is long and looks strong.

If you buy direct you can get a 30 day return guarantee, might be worth considering if you are in two minds. Then again, they make no reference to whether it is the MK2 or not.
 
So I thought I would update this thread about the K550 MK2's and I have to be honest that I have no complaints at all about returning the DT770's and getting these. They sound good with all kinds of music and there is no lack of bass that some people complained about with the original K550's, not to my ears anyway. Maybe they have tweaked the drivers to sound a little richer in the low ends? I don't know as I never owned them but for the short while that I had both, the AKG's just sound better all over.

It is all subjective I know, but I think they are a great buy for a shade over £100 and I am very happy with them. Good for gaming as well and the missus is happy so that is another bonus, I suppose.

Still miss my HP200's though. :(
