Closing shop on SMP Guide

Hi sir-les.

Sorry for the delay, I have been a little busy the last few days [new job woot!]. I will get as much done tonight as I can and will try to post everything you need by tomorrow evening - Friday at the latest.

no probs Siriusb there's no rush just thought id ask how far along it was.
i remember what it's like starting a new job everything goes on hold for a while.
If you want to take an extra day or so till you are happy everything is there and all in order and your fully happy with the idot sheet you have written for me thats fine.
Anything i can do to make the trasition smoother just let me know

Didn't see this before. If sir-les-mp gets fed up with it then I will certainly host it - got plenty of PHP and MySQL-enabled bandwidth going spare :)

(Also have mediocre PHP skills if anyone needs a hand.)

Hey sir-les

Please visit http://aeternum.co.uk/downloads/other/smp.zip to grab all the files you need.

Extract the file somewhere and you will find two documents: Documentation.txt and SETUP INSTRUCTIONS.txt. The first file is just some general info about the site, and the second is specific step by step instructions.

You should read both before doing anything. The setup instructions should tell you everything you need to edit in the source code [a few lines at most]. Once you have made the edits you will need to upload the files to your host.

The best way is probably by FTP, since you can upload the whole folder in one go. Whatever method you use, please ensure you keep the same folder structure! Everything uses relative paths so if you put a file in the wrong place it may not work :o

Any questions just let me know via email - [email protected]

Ahh I knew I missed something!

To alter them, you just need to do a Find & Replace on each of the files [XHTML and PHP]. Find "http://smp.aeternum.co.uk" and replace it with "" [leave the "replace" box empty.] Or you can do it manually, it is up to you :)

I am glad to see the site is working and my guide was good enough! Let me know when you have finished tweaking and I will take down the site on my server. I will also add redirects to the new URL, so all the old links should still work.

That might not last forever, so everyone really needs to update their bookmarks. Ill see if the Google Bot crawls the new site too.

i found the last of the links i needed to change
i must have been tired last night hence i missied them
the side bar and main links are now working properly
you should be able to remove the site from your server's when every you like now.

Good job :)

OK I have just set up the redirects. Any existing link to any page on smp.aeternum.co.uk should now be sent to the corresponding page on your URL.

After a while Google will index your site, though I dont know how often the bot comes around lol.

Well ive taken the precaution of uploading the site files to my online storage system i get with F2S
I would hate to lose the files after the few hours it took me to get it online all that trial and error
Now comes the hard part reading through it all and working out where the information should be updated to reflect the changes made @ stanford in respect to the clients.

After doing it the first time around I do not envy anyone that particular task!

I have uploaded a new sitemap to google with the new host URLs, so hopefully the Google Bot will come around sooner. It probably wont, but at least the sitemap points at your site rather than mine now.

While I am not around much, if you ever want to make a serious change and need help understanding the bowl of spaghetti that is my source code, just ask! I will be able to decypher it for you lol.

well i'll be taking my time doing it that way all the info should be correct
nothin worse than rushing it and getting half of it wrong
will also need to look into adding data to the current database and moving page's about as no doubt the info will most likely need a few more pages to be added
that way if i keep it within the current structure it will look better and make more sense

Moving pages about might be a little tricky with the current site design. If you like I could write a small admin program that will:

  1. Improve adding, editing and deleting content
  2. Allow you to reorder current pages
  3. Allow you to insert new pages into any location [and automatically update existing pages]
  4. Automatically make the changes to the database to let this work

The only change you would have to make is a few tweaks in the source code.

Though I no longer want to maintain the site, writing this tool lets me practice some new PHP stuff I have learned and makes it much easier for you guys to update the site!

We recommended the SMP Guide for a long time after it fell out of maintenance, and it was always linked to in the team news so it was a great success - well done SB for the original effort and good luck to it's new owner. ;)

I'm in a similar position myself - always booting into other OSs which make it a pain for folding amongst other reasons. I have got a single client running on my iMac/file server (which I like to think is the most expensive £/GB file server for many miles! :D) creeping slowly towards the million point mark (and your score) however.

Maybe the bug will bite us again one day! I noticed they are releasing some 8 core SMP units these days - amazing how the landscape has changed in a few years with GPU and multicore.

To be honest it probably isn't that out of date. The Ubuntu configuration should still be pretty accurate for the most part - I wrote the guide over 3 different versions and there was only one significant change [which made it easier!]. I don't imagine much else would have changed in the versions since.

The client itself probably functions the same too and again, may only need tweaks.

The main thing is the lack of new info. I know there is new/better/upgraded/different/whatever GPU client and no doubt the SMP client itself has been tweaked.

I could have done it all myself, but as I said in my OP, I don't really have the will to do it. Not only am I out of the loop, I don't fold anymore on any type of client! [not counting that rogue borg I have out there... lol]

Since I don't fold, out of the loop and don't really fancy doing it all over again - I think it is much better to hand over the reigns and move the site to someone who is active. The only input I am eager to give is a new admin panel, mainly because it's better than dreaming up my own pretend project lol.

Perhaps in a little while when I have money spare I can build a new dedicated foldy type rig, until then....

Things have barely changed on the SMP front... the things that have changed have mainly been under the hood, so it runs more reliably than it used to. Haven't had to prod the SMP client for ages, where I used to have to do it every day. The guide is still pretty accurate, I think.

Do we have a GPU guide that's similarly detailed to the SMP guide? If not, I was thinking that I could do one... got some time to kill at the moment. (I wrote one early on, but it's well out of date now.) We could link it in with the SMP guide.
