Cloud Computing... Yet another "Buzz word"

Wondered what everyone's thoughts on it were.. Technology run a muk or ingenious and futuristic?

It's basically another form of storage, but via the internet.

Or if you have a live login, and want a first hand look - there is also the SkyDrive

In some ways I think it's great, litteraly have access to all of your files from anywhere (regardless of your pc at home being turned on or off, removing the need for RDP)

I guess it could also be considered "greener"

Ah, welcome to the time train, now calling at mainframes and dumb terminals. So where you going to store all of your porno now? ;) :D

Edit: For serious answer, just take a look at a "Jetway J7F4K", that sorts out your "green" side really. I got it and as a server it does its job perfectly. (Though I run it as my main machine anyway, its even perfectly fine for watching SD videos and Iplayer, but does struggle with HD streams). Games now days need gigabytes of storage, are you really going to be downloading it every time you want to play one? Load times would be massive.

My opinion is for storing data, fair enough, but would you really trust a 3rd party with your data? How many times your own HDD failed? Personally for me, never. And even then important data should be backed up somewhere else anyway.

It's a good idea for travelling users, especially once wireless broadband speeds increase and the availability of high speed wireless networks increase.

Not a good idea for users that only use one PC, for obvious reasons.

Richard Stallman the founder of the GNU computer operating system stated cloud computing as “It’s stupidity. It’s worse than stupidity: it’s a marketing hype campaign, stick to your own computers, stay local”

I like the idea mind you of Microsofts new Azerus but it looks very much enterprise driven

There are a lot of unanswered questions left to be resolved if cloud computing is going to be the next break through in computing such as how do you operate at this scale, how do you make things essentially bulletproof in terms of reliability security and privacy?

Just finished a 5,000 word report cloud vs grid :(

Cloud Computing...

its not basically another form of storage. it means that you dont have to own all your applications and can just buy (use) them on a "as you need" basis

eg.... you wouldnt have to buy ms office and could just pay say 10pence to use it for a day and the app would run on your local pc although stored on a server somewhere else

good idea for some things and bad for others...

No, not quite. It's not just about storage but also about processing of information online. So you not just looking at online backups but online applications such as Google docs.

Edit: beaten :(

its funny the whole "thin client" thing keeps coming back again and again, eventually there will be enough bandwidth to the desktop to do it properly, but not yet.

Having said that some of the ideas around cloud computing are great - hosted clusters like google's app engine and Amazon's AWS are pretty cool, work well and serve a purpose very nicely.

The thing is, some applications easily transfer to the cloud paradigm, but some (bandwidth heavy apps) really don't. I'm thinking Adobe Premiere here.

Somes it up really, the whole google apps thing is a nice idea, being able to use a web book, dumb terminal to do your presentations and word documents. Id rather have them stored locally though. I know a corporate server will probably be much more resilant to problems, but I just like to know where my documents are.

I imagine as soon as a cloud company has a major security breach or a failure it will go away.

Its really all hype, google apps have been round for ages, the idea of doing all this remote computing is great, but I dont think our network infrastructure is capable of that amount of traffic just yet.

On a side note, has anyone set up a dumb terminal system within the home? One moderate server and a few terminals?

That is true.. failure could crumble multiple businesses all in one, security breach could be just as bad really.

I'm sure they would make it as secure and stable as possible, but there is always someone out there with a way around it...

Good thing for the most part. Having your information sources/library centrally stored and theoretically accessible from anywhere in the world is fantastic. My Google Calendar for example is much more useful than my Outlook calendar at work, which doesn't help me when I'm away from the office.

The main obstacle to overcome is mobile computing, which atm is prohibitively expensive for ordinary joe's like me.
