Hi

For a small setup of 5 users who have no server what would be the best/easisest/cheapest way for them to have different shared drives with permissions etc.

At the moment if they use a different pc they can't see their files etc.

Would it be some sort of cloud service?

How good is the Internet connection if you are looking at a hosted service?

You could do something on-premise with a 2 bay NAS

For something like a Synology what are the options for backing this up in the cloud?

I would be careful of recommending pure cloud-based services for a small team of 5 - it's unlikely that the internet connection will be up to much.

A Synology of some description backed up to Glacier would work well for this. In terms of ensuring that when people log into different machines they are automatically set up with shortcuts to their folders etc. you are looking at building a domain.

I've stuck in Office 365 Home Personal into an office of 5 on an 8mb connection; seemed to work perfectly well.

The more time I'm spending with OneDrive Business, the more I want to run away screaming...

Perhaps I'm trying to put a square peg in a round hole but reading other forums like Spiceworks would seem to indicate I'm not alone.

Its the desktop sync client with its limits and general lack of robustness that seems to let it down, if you can do without the sync client its not so bad.
