Car is 52,000 miles and just under 3 years old.

Gears are stiff to put into 1st & 2nd, this seemed to appear after I lent my car to my Dad to drop me of at the airport then left it standing at the airport car park for 7 days.

There are no other symptoms.

Taken to main dealer for service and they reckon it might need a new clutch, as its all gears to some extent and not just 1 & 2.

They quoted £637 for a replacement.

1) Is this a fair price?
2) Any chance they are wrong and just needs lubrication or something?

Thanks!

What make and model? Also, as a guess I'd say you probably could get it cheaper. Do you know any good independents nearby, or a clutch specialist?

Would help to know what car it was. If it's a Bentley Continental GT, I'd say it was a very good price, if it's a Nissan Micra then I'd say it was a rip off.

Thanks for looking

Fiat Stilo JTD, its not the amount really (its annoying) but just want to make sure I'm not being taken for a ride.

The local independent moved into a shed in a field, so won't go there anymore, will try another further one though.

surely you wouldn't need an entire new clutch for that?

The problem is places like Mr. Clutch etc will only replace the whole thing, even if you don't need it. And judging by the price ( probs about £300 labour and £340 parts) You'll be getting an entire new clutch. Thats still expensive for a clutch, i think you can pick up some nice uprated ones for around the £300 mark

That is my problem, it does not feel that major a problem.

But the dealer claims most of the cost is labour, and that is the worst possible cost.

They can't diagnose it until they take it all apart.

But I don't know if I can trust them not to just fit the whole new part.

well dont take it to a dealer. Google Mr clutch. Usually they will diagnose for free. Then if you dont want to use them, which could be signifcantly cheaper anyway, you could go to a local place that will change components.
Also if the dealers saying that, they could be charging you £450-500 in labour for something which can be done for a lot less.

its just hard to get in to a few gears and its not slipping is it?
if its a hydraulic clutch it may just need bleeding
or adjusting if a cable
doesnt sound like you need to replace all the clutch

Thanks guys.

Will find another garage and let them look at it blind without mentioning replacement clutch.

Agreed thats expensive, just booked my Mondeo into a Nationwide place for complete clutch AND flywheel for £647 - a clutch should be a lot less alone
