Driving along earlier today and stop at some traffic lights. When i pull off, on my change from 1st to 2nd, my clutch goes down with no resistance and sticks to the floor -.-

So i start the car turning it over in 2nd and drive for two miles clutchless. Only to have the clutch pop back up.

Now if i press down REALLY slowly on the clutch, it will engage. If i press ever so slightly too hard, it'll hit the floor again and stay there for about 5 minutes.

I'm thinking something to do with the hydraulic fluid, maybe some air in the system so i might bleed it? Just wondered if anyone else had any advice on the issue.

Cheers, the cars a 2003 Ford Fiesta Zetec 1.4

ultimately its going to involve somebody taking apart your gearbox to find out.

I presume if you're posting here you're not the sort to take gearboxes apart yourself ?

Get it booked in to a garage and ask them to quote you for whats wrong before they replace anything.

Not necessarily, if it's the master cylinder or a fluid leak from something other than the slave cylinder then that won't be needed.

Worth checking (but in this case probably not likely) that the clutch pedal to master cylinder clip has not become detached. Happened to a relatives car and I have simply held it back on with a cable tie which has worked for around 2 years now without issue! Link here with a better description:

It's a very common fault on these model Fiestas and Fusions.

NightShadow you were bang on, cheers. After bodging it with a tie wrap as recommended i noticed that i have fluid running down the clutch pedal, not enough to even drip off onto the mats, but enough so its visible.

at a guess, I'm thinking master cylinder leak, sound about right? And does this mean just a new seal, or a whole new cylinder if it is?

cheers :)

Why does he need to take the gearbox apart? It sounds like something is wrong with the clutch itself or something related to the clutch not the actual box. I see no reason at all why it would involve taking the gearbox itself apart!

New master cylinder time im afraid, cant get parts for these well not that im aware of, pretty common on these too.
