Morning all,

My friend's clutch on his remapped Golf GTI TDI (150) is dying.... But the car has done 100,000 miles on the standard (original) clutch, so not bad.!

So my question is...... what uprated clutch do people go for? and where from?

Thanks

uprated clutch in a remapped diesel is overkill.

Ring Sachs UK or get an OEM VW one (which is sachs)

Are you sure..?

As from what I have heard and read - Many people with re-mapped TDi's - are killing clutches...

they should stop riding them then :p

the stock sachs clutch is good for 350bhp and 400ft/lbs torque.

I dont think they even do one thats good for less?

What gearbox is on the tdi is it the 02Y/02J ?

100k on original clutch is poor really but I guess thats what remapping does for you.

Personally I'd go for another VW one as its unlikely he'll see the car through to its next clutch change.

have a look over on the uk-mkiv forum, there is a thread on this subject. its quite expensive to go down the uprated route

yea, i paid £500 for my stage 4 ceramic one, i was rather underwhelmed when it arrived - drives mint now though :D and its good for 700bhp and 700ft/lbs torque.

what? iam sorry buts that's just nonsense i would say 100,000 under average use is about spot on for a original clutch.

I've never owned a car thats not done over 150k on its original clutch.

I guess it just further illustrates how much easier on a car not living in town is I guess.

350 BHP..!!??

I find that hard to believe? Where did you get those facts / figures from?

Sorry - I'm not sure about the Gearbox No.

BHP isn't the issue with the stock VW TDI clutches (and 1.8Ts) are only rated to 290lbft, remapped the 130/150 TDI are chucking out around 310-330lbft at only 1900 revs depending on map and combined with a tall 6th gear and people nailing it from low down they take a lot of abuse so only last around 100k (I driven a standard 150TDI with 195k on its original clutch). You are better to put a uprated Sachs clutch kit on which I beleave are rated to 400lbft its actually almost the same price as the standard one anyway which is still made by Sachs but a different model of pressure plate which is what limits the torque.

this is what the stock r32 clutch was rated at but Sachs told me this was the same as the 1.8 Gti etc ?

must have been wrong.

Just as an aside, should the flywheel be changed at the same time as the clutch?

Only way to tell for sure is to inspect it when the 'box is out, and if theres any doubt replace it. The last thing you want is the dual mass flywheel coming apart after its been rebuilt :). We've have to replace them in TDI Golfs at as early as 50000 miles in one case...
:)

yup, down to people not being able to use a clutch properly.

Holding the car on the clutch on hills etc.

I thought 'riding the clutch' referred to having it slightly depressed pretty much all the time and not resting your foot in higher gears etc.
