Hello, I think my car is having problems, I'd appreciate any help you can give me.

So I'm driving along, as you do, and I go from 3rd to 2nd to slow for a junction, but the gear stick seems to be stuck, but eventually pops out. Putting into 2nd feels like I'm moving the stick through a bucket of melted cheese, and moving into any gear requires considerably more effort than usual. Eventually it returned to normal, but suddenly went all cheesy again, only this time, the gear stick wouldn't stay in second, and keeps popping out. Which was rather irritating.

I recently had a new clutch put in, might that have something to do with it? Or has something else gone wrong?

Its possible that the gear linkages may not of been attached properly when the clutch was fitted.

You will probably be able to see by poping up the bonnet if you no what you are looking for.

Could be gear linkages. It could be the clutch not disengaging properly. Might be an idea to renew gearbox oil as well if it hasnt been done with the new clutch install.

With my car when it jumped out of gear my engine mounts were worn causing a lot of movement. Not sure if this could also be a possible problem

Hmm ok, I have no idea what I'm looking for. If I go to the garage and complain a lot should they fix it for me? The new clutch was about 2 weeks ago.

You drive a small hatchback with short cogs and skinny synchro rings.

It needs to be going slowly to make it into second, that or you could double it.

Don't really know what you mean but I was driving like normal, was actually planning on going round the corner in second so I was close to crawling when I changed down.

Explaining that further is only going to get more technical.

Does this happen every time you change down into second? Has that started lately?

Started just last night, never happened before. I've put it in the garage just now as its close to undrivable, pops out of reverse as well now, was amusing pushing it around the drive. As its Sunday and no one there is qualified to look at it I'll have to wait until tomorrow before they can tell me anything.

Update, so the garage called me today, said it was the gear linkage cables, I asked if it was because they were messed up when the new clutch was put in and he said that they wouldn't have touched the cables and that I'll need to pay £170 for new ones.

Am I being taken for a ride here?

They would have had to touch the cables, since they are attached to the gearbox which needs to be removed when the clutch is replaced.

The gearbox doesn't need to be removed.

[Edit: actually that's was way to patronising to say]

@OP:

If they were trying to fleece you, you would be getting a new gearbox.

No, but there's enough room to part the 2 and get the clutch out. It's only got an iccle engine.

Still means they have to move the gearbox around though, and they could easily have put strain on the gearchange cables if they didn't disconnect them. I've seen some places that think it's perfectly ok to hang calipers from the brake pipes...anythings possible.
