Clutch gone in car, garage charging £700 !

Just found out my Nissan Alerma 2000 clutch is gone, not sure if that is 'common. Done about 70,000.

They want to charge me £700, inc vat and labour, seems crazy expensive. any advice ?

just called around local garages and the first two quoted me £424 and £447 which seems better .....

Got it down to £420 now which seems better. Is it right for the car of my age for the clutch to go ?
