Hey guys, so basically i own a MK5 Golf 1.6 fsi and today my cars clutch has possibly broken as now the clutch pedal is quite light to press, the biting point is very low and it requires abit of force on the stick to put it into gear also you can feel a slight shake or vibration in the clutch pedal at certain points. so i took it to a garage, he drove it and got someone to listen to the engine while he revved it and they said its the clutch and wanted around £550 for a supply and fit but got him down to £500.

My question is, is this quite steep? as ive seen on euro car parts a clutch kit is around £100 or am i missing something as im not very knowledgable about cars. Ps i live in south west london if that could be a factor

Thanks in advanced guys

Not sure about yours, but mine is around £500 for just the clutch. The deal breaker is the labour, it takes a lot time to get to the clutch and to reassemble it, so I'm not sure you'll find it much cheaper.

Is it a reputable place?

seems to be, the guy was friendly but they have 2 good reviews and 2 that are bad. They are 4 year old reviews the most recent was very positive though.

one review caught my attention it said their car was badly damaged and scratched by them while they had the car and is in contact with trading standards!

I would go get a bunch of quotes first. Also, try looking them up on the good garage scheme, I've not come across a bad one through that yet.

Ditto. - Actually I think I can get a new friction disc and cover plate for ~£350, but to replace it last time the engine, gearbox and transfer case all had to come out.

Changing the clutch was easy, but not getting to it.

yea £500 is far too much imo. the clutch kit would only cost £70 if you check ebay or carparts4less.
get more quotes and play them off against each other :)

It really depends on your car as to how much work it is, a lot of front wheel drive cars need the front subframe dropping out to get to the gearbox to change the clutch. It can easily be 4-5 hours and say £130 for a decent clutch kit, also you may need to get the flywheel skimmed. So i'd say £500 is reasonable but always get a couple of other quotes.
