clutch or clutch and flywheel?

hi I am after a bit of advice.
my wife has a 3 years old BMW 1 series 120D xdrive. few days ago the drive train warning light came on so we took it to the dealer to diagnose it
It appeares it is due to the clutch wearing off. (apparently car has been driven with the clutch partially pressed ??? overheated..not sure) Car has 46 K miles on bord
Anyway, the service department told us we can still use the car but at some point the clutch needs to be changed. And they do recommend to change the clutch and the dualmass flywheel
The quoted us £2172 for the works and parts - clutch and flywheel and £897 for clutch itself.
Does this prices sound correct.?
Also do I need to change both together , the service chap said the car may judder(well he said more than 50% it will judder) if only clutch is changed. Is this correct?

I have little knowledge about this hence looking after some advice

Thank you

I believe it is advisable to do both together. It might be worth ringing a few dealers for a price.

Can't believe the clutch has gone so soon though! Is your wife a driving instructor or something? :D

We had to have clutch and flywheel replaced on an 04 Astra whilst on holiday last year. Cost us £1300.

I paid £650 for my 06 2.0 Tdi Jetta earlier in the year at a VW specialist using Sachs clutch kit and flywheel (same as genuine VW parts). Parts were about £450, so labour £200.

If you plan on keeping the car for a while then I'd definitely get the flywheel done at the same time. It's not worth the risk.

while its advisable to replace the flywheel, at 46k i cant see much wear and tear tbh, also that price is wayyyy over the top. go elsewhere.

That makes no sense. A clutch that wears out after 46k will have caused the same amount of wear to the flywheel as a clutch that wears out at 100k or 200k.

With a dual mass, surely a higher mileage unit will be more worn out. Or are you just talking about the contact surface?

thanks for the answers .
I see the consensus is to change both , as some have said it if the clutch is gone then the flywheel is not in good condition anyway.
I have asked around , BMW independent service providers and to my surprise the cost is similar high- £ 1900 or there about . They said there are no third party parts and needsd to use genuine BMW parts which brings up the price

What can I say- Unlucky.

Problem is, if you have taken a clutch out in 46k the heat damage to the flywheel will be enough to warrant a replacement. I wouldn't skim a flywheel after all the trouble we had when we were sending them for skimming on the Volvo Trucks!

I had a clutch issue on my mk6 Golf recently. So I had both replaced. From memory the cost was around £1k at an independant garage. I believe part of the teason it was cheaper there was that they offered me the choice of using non VW parts. I can't recall the make but apparently they were manufactured by the same company but simply not branded VW (it's a garage I use a lot and trust).

Two cars I've had clutches changed on both I didn't bother with the dmf. One had to all be ripped apart again and replaced including another clutch the other I sold quite quickly and ignored the calls after.

Both started shuddering soon after a new clutch.

A bmw independent will be pitched just lower than a main dealer and use pattern parts which will make the overall bill less. It's just a clutch try a basic garage.

I paid £800 for clutch and flywheel on my 320d last year. That was from an indy garage (and was the cheapest I had found by far) using LUK parts. The parts for your 120d are quite possibly the same as on my 320d too. The specialists local to me were quoting around £1200 all in which is still a lot better than the quotes you're getting so I still saved quite a bit.

My clutch was actually ok but it was the DMF that was knackered. That needed doing at around 95k but I got the car on 58k miles - no idea what the previous owner had done.
