Got a weird problem with the car, just wondering if anyone can solve it before I book it into a garage.

When I'm driving along, the car will suddenly rev like crazy. i have no way to describe it, kind of acts like you've got the clutch depressed.
If I take my foot off the accelerator then put it back down, the problem goes away.

Notice it more when the cars cold, 1st 10 minutes or so into a drive.

It's a Ford Fiesta.

How much would I be looking at to get a garage to sort this out?
And for a silly question, what are the chances of someone like me, who has no experience in car repair, fixing this myself?

Around £50-60 for the clutch kit and probably £100 labour.

Fitting it yourself? If you've got a ramp/pit, all the relevant tools, parts, service manual etc. it's possible but extremely unlikely.

Isnt a quick way to check is put the handbrake on and put it in a high gear and see if it slips when trying to pull away. If it doesn't it will just stall?

its technically not very hard. but the fiesta has a hydro clutch and the slave is plastic and easily brakes, you will need to take the anti roll bar off, take the lower ball joint out of place, remove the battery and tray, , unbolt the gear box, drain the oil, unbolt the clutch and put the new 1 in, and then the rest in reverse i have done fiestas in 3 hours on the floor. it not much fun.

Worth checking your flywheel while your at it, as while the clutch is out you may as well change that also.

As a quick check if you drive the car and get the revs shooting up like you mention, pull over and pop the bonnet. If there's a horrible stink coming from the engine bay that's further indication that the clutch has been slipping.

I didn't understand a word of that, but if your goal was to scare me, well done sir.
