Drove my dads 330D (2012) last weekend and noticed that when the clutch is midway between fully depressed and engaged it 'rattles' a lot, mostly noticeable in neutral, likely as the engine noise drowns it out when driving. No noise when fully pressed in or fully engaged. The clutch itself is fine and dosen't feel like its slipping or juddering etc.. just that very loud rattle that sounds like its coming from under the passenger side. Mileage is 39000. My dads a tad deaf but even he heard it when i pointed it out to him, guess he was just accustomed to it. Any ideas? big money? :D

Spoke to him and he reckons its always made that 'grumble' but i owned 2 E90 320Ds and a 335D and never had that so i think somethings defective or wearing too quickly, he dosen't ride the clutch or boyrace it and never had clutch issues with previous cars so can't fault him really. Hes had it from 1yr old. Going to take it one day to my mechanic but would be good to have an idea what it might be.

Could this not be a dual mass flywheel issue? Unusual to have issues at 39k though but anything is possible I guess.

I did think DMF, but why would it do it when only halfway depressed?

A DMF is either going to rattle with the clutch engaged or disengaged (or both), so why halfway?

Mysterious :o

Edit: OP, you're going to have to have this investigated to satisfy my curiosity :p

Initial thoughts from mechanic is release bearing as well, will have to wait awhile as my dads not giving it up until another 2 months or so. Mechanic said it'll be fine and probably will work ok apart from the rattle until the cars in the scrapper lol.

I would say release bearing, rattling at 39k miles it must be faulty or your dad really likes to abuse the clutch. :p I fitted a new clutch kit in my 2004 Fiesta 1.4 TDCI last year and it started to do the same rattle after a week and had a loud rattle at idle. I ended up taking it out again and got my money back on the kit.

I picked up a 2006 Astra 1.7 CDTI 111k miles last week and that has the original DMF and clutch and that has the same rattle you describe, it is loud when the pedal is pressed half way and I can hear it slightly when my foot is off the pedal. If your dads car is under warranty get it looked at, if it's not I would leave it until it gets worse then fit a new clutch kit.

Dont know why so many people are caught up on the mileage - you can give a car a lot of punishment by doing lots of short journeys, which normally involve using the clutch more. If it was a 200k mile car it would have probably spent it's life on a motorway with the clutch rarely being used

Can't believe it was this easy but BMW are saying its likely a faulty DMF or Release bearing and are repairing it under warranty. Totally slipped my mind the age of the car and the fact it had some warranty left, my dad took it there yesterday and called me this morning.

I know, expected either a denial of problem or accusation of abuse but the rep said it happens sometimes lol. Guess my dad getting 3 cars off them in the last 12 years makes a difference, they were buttering him up for a 5 Series GT but even Mr Tasteless couldn't deny it was ugly as sin :D
