Hey guys, need my clutch changed on my little Daihatsu Sirion car.

I have purchased the 3 piece clutch and am shopping around for a mechanic but the price range is so varied from £125 all the way up to £400.

Are they difficult to change? Is it possible the £125 quid fella could do a ****** job? Just don't know why he is so cheap compared to the others, is there a risk going with a cheaper mechanic for a clutch?

Thanks,

Mart

It depends on the car really. On the YRV, the four cylinder engine meant the clutch was an engine out job. Where as the three cylinder probably had enough room to get the gearbox off. Nice to see a Sirion still about :)

Thanks mate, yeh love these little cars. It's a slightly newer model than the YRV, a 2006 model and sure it is a 3 cylinder. It has the 1KR-FE engine that is used in loads of cars like the yaris etc

So you reckon £125 is not suspicious, assuming it is a straight forward job?

Cheers Mate

£400 is too much, £123 is a good deal. I paid £200 for my Civic 1.8 clutch replacement (I supplied the clutch kit at extra cost) and they had to remove a fair chunk of the suspension etc to get at the gearbox. I wouldn't spend over £200 for clutch fitting unless it's really involved.

Thanks guys, £125 is just for labour as I am supplying the clutch parts. Don't know if it's relevant but it is a mechanical clutch not a hydraulic one, maybe that is why it is cheaper..? I read they are easier to work with.

Sounds like the guy doing it for £125 is probably doing it as a private job (off the books), as opposed to the guy charging £400 is probably booking it in as a job.

Sounds good guys, gonna book him and just see what happens! I've started to get quotes now for 150,170 etc so 125 doesn't seem too far off. Let you know how it goes! haha

Just ask for a non invoiced price :) meaning if it goes wrong you don't have fitting warranty my mechanic is basically £50/hour if issuing official invoice or "mates rates" he is a mate so a private off book job £20 an hour lol

@ £50/hour labour which is a good average here in N.I that's 2.5 hours labour. So for a small car were gearbox just literally drops out sound a fair price.

I charge £30 per hour for my private jobs. Book time is 4.3hrs, so I'd round up for the quote to 4.5. I'd quote £135, providing everything goes to plan

Just to add, the place I work at would quote for 4.3 at £70 p/h +VAT, so £361.20
