review:
I was given this album by a friend a few years back, he didn't say much other than "Give it a listen, tell me what you think".
Within about a minute of pressing play I had absolutely no idea what type of music it was, nothing like I had already, thats for sure. It sounded a bit like Faith No More which was cool I liked FNM, I stuck with it.
The first song "Big News I", an overpowering bass, it didn't stray much from the same 10 or so notes.
The vocals come in and it sounds like the guy is possessed, ranting, he's certainly not babysitter material.
The drums have a snappy sound to them, very minimal, that is until the guitar comes in.
Out of nowhere the guitar comes alive and follows the same bass line, the bass and guitar blend into something so tuneful your nether regions tingle.
It takes a few listens before other things become clearer like, just how good the production is, just how many different melodies they pack into one song, and that the singer sounds like someone on the verge of sanity.
If you listen to or read the lyrics, music aside, he can deliver some of the most detailed and imaginative content you will hear in rock music.
The lyrics are derived from everything from folklore to presidential assassins, they really make you sit up and take notice, make you laugh, make you think.... i.e.
Then against my better judgment I went walking out that door.
I smiled at one person then I nodded to three more.
One man asked me for a dollar, I asked him, "What's it for?"
He said, "I have seen them." I said, "O.K., it's yours."
And as featured on the MTV, the local high school lets out,
And the town becomes anarchy.
Parties are crashed, skid marks are measured.
The story's in the paper, you may read it at your leisure.
The record has a style that I've never found in any other hard rock band, very pedestrian sometimes (Tight Like That), other times very intense (Animal Farm).
I still listen to this album almost weekly. It needs volume, and a lot of it. It has everything a good record needs including some fine musicians who work really well together.
Stand out tracks are:
Escape from the Prison Planet
I Have the Body of John Wilkes Booth
Texan Book of the Dead
I have no idea how big it was in the U.S. and it's only now that Clutch are staring to get noticed, (UK at least).
If you do get a chance to go see them live. For a start though, get this album.
