OK, this will be a strange one.
We have a Dell R310 server.
We are attempting to install Debian (Squeeze) on it and it's failing to find the onboard NIC.
According to the spec sheet for the R310 the onboard NIC could be one of about three different NIC's.

Does anyone happen to know what NIC the onboard controller is on a Dell R310?

I'll watch this post vanish down the forum now :)

I'm on hold with Dell at the moment :)
We've put a custom Debian Lenny disk in and as far as that is concerned it can see a NIC, but isn't quite sure what it is :-/

Looked at the physical board and there is a Broadcom chip near the rear of the machine.
However the numbers on the chip don't refer to any Broadcom it might be.
I am however more inclined to believe they have used a Broadcom over the Intel alternative.

I'll find another LiveCD to try.

Go to the dell website, type the service tag in, and click 'original configuration' (or something similar)

You'll get the full hardware list the server shiped with.

Be nice if that worked for servers :)
"Original Configuration" just lists 2x GB Ethernet

Looks like it is a Broadcom NetExtreme II Onboard - in case Google picks up this thread and somebody else needs to know :)
