A friend of mine has a 'proper' CNC router with a 3000mm long bed which sits in his factory not doing a lot most of the time.

What sort/types of things can be made using a CNC Router. Im guessing he puts mdf board on it.

I know this question might seem a little weird but there is a good reason for asking it ;)

Makerbots are cool, they are a little on the expensive side but a good place to start though. I aim to build a full Reprap at some point in the future, the project is constantly evolving.

The OP might want to check out http://www.thingiverse.com as the whole idea behind the site is things to make on your CNC type machine. I'm not sure how suitable they are for CNC routing but it might give you some ideas.

I want a makerbot.

Ive got one ;)

Building it now :D

As for a CNC router, if the Z axis (i.e. Depth) is also cnc controlled (Some are not!) then anything you like. You can cut pretty much anything, but be aware that steels and the like would need coolant to cut correctly. But as for anything else, whatever you like, as long as you can program it, it can cut it!

yes, its got the z- axis, the lot. Its a proper industrial jobby worth a fortune probably not a hobby thing in the shed.

We've a couple in work about a similar size to the one you describe. Mostly used for stair strings, newel posts, curved counter tops, flat-pack furniture as well as graphics for displays or similar.
The guys that use them though have never been properly trained in their use & what we do on them probably only scratches the surface of their ability.

There are 2 in my dept at work we use them to cut excess skin off Nissan Note dashboards, they make a hell of a mess. They are a fair size and I'm not sure what the travel is but it's not 3m, this CNC Mc must be about 10 feet long?
