I don't get it, a black councillor calls an Asian woman a coconut and is convicted of racial harassment. On the radio this morning they interviewed some people from Bristol, presumably black, who all said that the term coconut was derogatory to varying degrees. Apparently it means that you are black on the outside but white on the inside, but surely being white on the inside would be a good thing, meaning you have properly integrated yourself in your host country's culture?

im sure another identicle event happened in the same city.

but anyway when i was little all the black people used to call us milky ways or white icecream

coconut means stupid where I come from... in the same way as mellon, prune and spanner.

imagine working in a place where 1 word take your to court....

the asian woman needs to be sacked for being a time waster..

mrs brown needs to be sacked is all she has on her mind is getting the most for poeple with black skin.

As it says in the article the implication is that you have forgotten/betrayed your roots so whether you think it would be a good thing is largely irrelevant - the intent is to insult and that is how it will be taken by many. Shirley Brown would have been well aware of the connotations of what she was saying so it's a very stupid thing to say, particularly in a political debate with your opponent.

You infer that being white is better making you a Racist. :D I think  + :p
It's been an insult for as long as I can remember & usually heard when Black coppers are nicking fake Yanky copying Black Gangster rap types.

That would be a ban on most forums.

but it was funny....

however unelss you are black, asian, work at kfc or attend a lot of plannign meetings you are not in a position to say if it was offensive.. and if it was not offensive there was nothing wrong with it..

Not if you're a thick, black racist.

Well when I was at Brunel in the late 90's there were some fairly serious racial problems with Asians v whites and the Asians would single out any guy or girl who preferred to hang out with white people rather than in their groups. They got labelled coconut and were pretty much outcast. Can't say I've heard the phrase since, but it was definitely directed in an aggressive racist way, make no mistake about it.
