Hello

just brought cod 4 for pc on DVD and my system won't read the cod 4 DVD ??

DVD works fine in another computer, so the disk is fine.

Anyone got any ideas ? Running vista sp2 drive readsother disks ok

is this a common problem with cod 4 disks ?

Thanks for any help/info

ben

May be a problem with your drive to be honest. Some optical drives from some manufacturers can be a bit funny when it comes to reading certain discs.

How does it not read anyway? Does the light stay on but show nothing in windows or does it go off and windows ignore it?

Haz's suggestions sound good too. :)

Hello,

The laptop is a Acer 6930G with a slimtype dvd a ds8a2s DVD drive

Reads all other DVD/CD games, just wont read COD 4. The COD 4 disk works fine in another system.

Uninstalled DVD drive and controller from device manager and updated to latest drivers from Acer.

Windows up to date.

Uninstalled all programs like Demon Tools or virtual drive software.

Run spy bot and registry clean up.

I am totally losted lol

Carnt seem to find anywhere a updated firmwire for the slimtype dvd a ds8a2s

Anymore ideas ?

Thanks Ben

Still unable to get it working !! installed in over the network now via sharing the DVD drive on another system lol took 2 hours :(

All i have left to do is update the firmware for the drive, but i carnt find a update anywhere. I think its a lite on drive so have e-mailed there customer support.

Updated my laptops BIOS that dint help.

Totally stuck, this is why i should have stuck with 360 for gaming. PC gaming always always always gives problems that take hours/days to fix lol sorry for rant. I just wanna play COD 4 !! :)

Well for anyone else out there you may come up against this problem.

I have come to the conclusion that the DVD drive in my laptop is incompatible with the COD 4 DVD disk ! simple as that. Waiting to hear from Lite-ON who may have a firmware update ???

At least its installed and working, patched to 1.7 and runs well on my 9600GT :)

Thanks Ben

Hi, i have the same laptop with you with the same drive and im having this problem as well, except its a large portion of my DVD collection that won't work.
I too have come to the conclusion that the DVD drive just doesnt read them, I think i have found a link with the DVD's that do and don't work. The ones that do work have all been bought from British companies or from stores in England, however the ones that don't work (including Empire Total War which i bought only a few weeks ago) have been bought from international retailers
Although all the disks are PAL - Region 2 i think there must be a slight difference in them causing our drives not to read them.
Have you heard anything yet about a firmware update?

Hello,

Your new round here and might want to edit out them company games. I brought mine from a local UK high street store and it dont work, so not sure on your theory of from buying from international retailers. Good idea though.

Not heard anything from Lite-ON yet re the firmware, will update the post if i do.

To install over the network i just mapped the DVD drive on the other computer then on the computer u want to install go to run and type " \\pcname\e (e being the dvd drive letter) and make sure the drive is shared.

Hope this helps :)

Ben

Registered to let you know that I'm also suffering the same problem (same laptop, same drive, same game, though I can't get 3/4 of the Battlestar Galactica Final Season DVDs to be read either). I just wanted to know how you found out the drive was a Lite-ON drive, as if you can confirm that's correct, I'll have a go at badgering them myself. Two people complain of the same problem and they're sure to take notice!

Also, tried to do that mapped drive stuff, but to no avail. It just says 'Access is denied' every time I try and access the shared folder, I can't even map it to a drive on the PC with the drive (which is XP, if that means anything). You didn't run into similar problems, did you?

Cheers for the help, and I'm eagerly awaiting the response to your query to Lite-ON, if it comes back any time soon.

I've since rad that these machines are a bit fickle about what disc's they can and can't read.....

Hope there is a fix

I contacted Acer today and they were no help. They don't seem to want to help the user sort the problem out themselves, instead preferring you to restore everything to factory settings to test it's not a software issue, then getting you to send it to them (at your own cost, of course) only for them to, no doubt, return it and say they can't find an issue. Ridiculous!

I might just have to get myself a new DVD drive. It'll probably be cheaper and less hassle than what Acer are trying to do...

Hello,

I checked on the Lite-ON web site for the model number of the drive, they do not list ours but the closes match is "ds8a2L" 1 letter out L instead of the S :) must be a liton drive.

No reply back from Liteon yet :(

I knew acer would be a pain, run a restore see if it fixes lol no chance !! its there rubbish drive.

I have just settled on it being rubbish and if i was u buy another drive and bin this one. Not much help but maybe the quickest and easiest fix.

Will update if i hear from Lite-ON.

Thanks Ben

I tried calling Acer again today and got someone who was a little more sympathetic to me who actually listened to what I said. They apparently have firmware for the drive themselves, but do not release them. If you want to get firmware upgrades, they are all done in-house. It's at this point they suggested I return the unit for the firmware upgrade and, if the problem is still not fixed, a new drive. I now just need to decide whether I want to return it... At least there might be some hope for a firmware update.
