Seems to be simply activating the dev console rather that dedicated servers.

Yup. You read that right. Modern Warfare 2 PC now has dedicated servers.

Wait, PC gamers! Before you send Bobby Kotick a thank you letter, know that it wasn't they who did it, but rather the gamers who took Infinity Ward and Activition's attempts to lock down the game as a challenge. And bring it those gamers did, managing to hack in the developer console and enable the ability to set up dedicated servers. Keep in mind, the game hasn't even been out a week.

Perhaps some of the boycotters caught playing the game were not being hypocrites, but rather hard at work turning the highest-profile shafting of PC gamers right around, as the video below might demonstrate.

Of course, the darker side to all this newfound freedom is the ability to use it to cheat, and the servers that have been set up so far are all "ranked" and still considered "legal" by IWNet, Modern Warfare 2's console-esque matchmaking service.

Folks who like their games in "vanilla" flavor only shouldn't despair though. After all, MW2 uses anti-cheating tech from Valve, who, if nothing else, are very, very aware of what PC gamers can do, and how to deal with them.

That said, it's just a matter of time until they the first thing they did was mod it so that you can lean again.

[Thanks to Jetsetlemming for the tip!]

I presumed that there would be people who would create a workaround and set up some dedicated servers and I'm so glad they have. It was always going to happen, especially considering the number of people that IW annoyed with the way they have done things.

Roll on the release of a full blown mod to the game I say!... obviously without the silly server side settings like jumping 200ft in the air

For the record, I gave up on the boycott a few days after hearing about it, and am primarily a console gamer, but I love this news! :D

I will reiterate, the best thing about PC gaming is the community. I'm constantly in awe of what is achieved by amateur coders and what not... Astonishing. The console gaming scene doesn't have anything like this, it really is amazing.

Is there not a danger that involving oneself in these console hacks would cause a permanent VAC ban resulting in an inability to play any online steam games?

news; 99% of MW2 on PC users supposedly download dedicated servers hack

a day later, 99% of MW2 on PC users have been banned from steam

I have reliable sources - A crazy lady that lives in a tree, can read peoples minds and predict the future.

Quality shaft IW as much as possible. Got to love the modders :D

I'm sure IW will feel really 'shafted' that some modders have done some work they didn't want to do and as a result will probably help sell the game to a handful more gamers who were just waiting for DS support.

I've watched the video and I wasn't convinced. Found the original source of the 'mod'.

It doesn't have anything to do with dedicated servers at all, someone has unlocked the developer console and the hosting player now has the power to effectively play admin but there is no fundamental change in the backend operation of the service and it does not have dedicated servers still.

Stuff like this really makes me wonder if people understand what dedicated servers even are.

Haha thats awesome .. and my copy still hasnt arrived (thanks cd-wow)

IW/Activision told them legal action would be taken if they carried on with the mod so wonder what they will do

Mod it some more i hope.. HAHA IW feel the power of community V

search 'AgentGOD developer console' and you should be able to find it from there.

It doesn't support dedicated servers though, it's just opening up the developer console.

IW did do the work, dedicated servers are in the MW2 multiplayer exe...

I can't see them being happy about this, I'm sure the reason they didn't include dedicated servers on release is far more ominous than 'not being bothered.' Subscription base dedicated servers via IWNet? I wouldn't put it past Robert Kotick!
