COD MW3 online with a controller/60Hz TV...

So TLDR my rig in my sig lives under my 4K 60Hz TV, and I just use it for SP games and cap the FPS to 60...

IF I bought MW3 and played it with a controller, would I just get owned due to the 60Hz? I don't see the point in leaving the FPS uncapped if the TV is only 60Hz?

I really CBA to move it back under the desk and use my 1440 165Hz monitor, I just fancy the nostalgia of COD MP online with a controller and a big TV, like the old console days.

No you won't get owned, you just likely won't top the leaderboard.

A controller adds so much input lag that 60hz or 120hz doesn't really matter as much as when using a mouse and keyboard.
iu

I heard there was some levelling/matching system though?
There was with COD on PS4 when I'd plug a K+M in it'd only put me with K+M players, I heard the same was the case for controller on PC? As I noticed when I tried warzone out last night it put me with controller players?
So then it'd be down to Hz factor again?

If you play with a controller I think you get teamed with other players that play with a controller and your keyboard and mouse gets disabled, that's why there is a setting in the options to set it to either controller or k & m, I play on a ps5 and sometimes see pc players with a controller icon next to their name
Yeah, that's what I saw on PS4 on previous games and last night on warzone with a controller. I wonder if playing on a 60Hz tv would mean I'd still get owned?

You’ll be absolutely fine. I played for a couple of years at 4k 60htz and have always used controller.

The vast majority of cod players are on console through a TV.

Controller is supposedly the easiest method for cod as K&M players constantly complain about controller aim assist.

I went from 4k@60 to 1440@280 and the difference has probably been <10% in my in game performance.
Yeah but I'm talking about playing against PC people who'll be using high Hz monitors but both of us using a controller and me only using a 60Hz tv with the PC plugged in with a controller?

Is there anyway to turn off aim assist I'm very against stuff like that.

Well if you compared yourself to someone at 2x3 your FPS you are slightly disadvantaged but ability would still come out on top.

The vast majority of call of duty pros use controller on PC these days.

You can turn off aim assist totally in controller settings but I wouldn’t recommend it that’s disadvantaging yourself more than limiting yourself to 60 frames.
Sound mate, that helps a lot :)

just run around and jump constantly, Aim assist will take care of the rest  (but also kind of )

i first started playing warzone on an old plasma, sat on a dining chair in the middle of the room bit on wood on my knees with a mouse and keyboard. Eventually, i got a long displayport cable and ran it to the dining table, playing on a 60hz 1440p monitor with vsync on. Eventually i turned off vsync and let the pc run faster, i hate tearing, but my performance improved a noticable amount. Then i got a 24" 1080p 144hz monitor, and its a much better experience. feels more responsive.

60hz feels really slow to me now.

I would imagine the difference would be less obvious (if at all) with a controller though
Haha!

Yeah the thing is I have that tasty 1440p 165hz monitor (in my sig) at the desk, but I like having the rig under the TV as I only really play SP games and love using a controller.

I get savage wrist cramps doing K+M, I have a MITX at the desk using that monitor now, which can sort of play CS2 depending on the map (lol poor RX 570 8GB/Ryzen 3600)

I did use the TV rig under the desk for a month or so then when playing SP games with a controller, I thought why am I using a 32" monitor when I have a 65" 4K tv 2 metres behind me

I do miss playing CS2 properly though, was getting like 465fps at 1440p native :D

I'm basically just having a poor me first world problem and trying to have my cake and eat it being lazy in the sofa chair with the tv haha!

is your TV limited to 4K 60? I'm looking at replacing my TV soon, and even 2022 oleds (maybe older) do 4K 120hz with VRR now, which must be pretty impressive.

My plan is to keep the PC in ITX format, so i can move it between upstairs and downstairs when i want 4k@120 ish. and for casual 4k 60hz gaming, i might try "moonlight" to stream from the PC upstairs to my Apple TV, it works pretty well by all accounts... you wouldnt want to play COD on it though as the added latency is significant.

so you could try COD on the monitor, see if the higher refresh rate helps, then maybe try and stream to the TV for more casual stuff.
Yep 4K 60.

IMHO 120Hz, although better, isn't really worth it to replace a tv versus a monitor, for SP sure it'll be silky smooth and nice, but I personally don't bother with SP games above 60Hz and always frame cap them, keeps my rig silent/using hardly any power and prolongs the hardware stressing it less, IMHO unless it's MP there is no real benefit to me as a locked 60 is a very nice experience.

Considering there is a lot of sad people that take it to OTT levels and get 500+ Hz 1080p monitors now, paired with the amount of hackers, I just don't think you can ever win on the same level, that's why I only went for 165Hz for my 1440p monitor when the rig was at the desk.

Yeah no joke I was thinking that mate, try it on my monitor at the desk first, and compare how owned I get at the tv haha! I know if it'd been CS2 for example it would be a blood bath in comparison.

But as has been mentioned before COD likes to group people based on input devices, so I think a controller battle lobby would do me fine - only thing putting me off, is the fact there is that aim assist, which I wasn't aware of when I first made the OP. That now makes me feel like other controller people will have an advantage over me and wrongly so by IMHO cheating effectively by using that, I'm a purist who turns all that jazz off, as with racing games, has to be clutch/manual/no driving assists etc haha!

yeah, i wouldnt replace a TV to go from 4k60 to 4k120 either. Mine is a 1080p plasma, and its having trouble switching on now.

for me personally, higher refresh is a game changer. i'll turn down settings for a higher fps, even in single player, it just feels nicer. I even run my desktop at 120Hz at work now. i think 144-165 hz is probably the sweetspot, i havnt tried faster, but ive read online that much faster than that is beyond the point of diminishing returns.

Dunno about COD grouping controller methods, on multiplayer its usually me, maybe one other, and the rest on controller, though i dont recall seeing this on MW3, it showed it in the lobby screen on MW2.

Warzone in lockdown got me back into gaming, more now than ever really. I'm moving away from COD into more single player games, as i just get so ****** off with it. looking forward to playing on the new TV when i get it

I'm sure you'll be fine whatever you do.
:) Yeah in your situation taking the jump from a faulty 1080p to 4k120 vrr, is a no brainer mate :)

I hung onto my 1080p tv's for years. TBH this 4k60 is the first brand new tv I've bought since 2006, so it was justified. I had many second hand 1080p tv's up till then, but was too busy spending money on drift cars to borrow with a brand new tv. Then the opportunity came round when 120hz came out and I thought, sod that I don't need it for what I want from a tv. As I say all I do is play SP games with a controller by choice, and anything MP I use the 2nd rig for at the desk, but I can't justify buying a 6700XT and a new cpu for the MITX at the desk just to play CS2/COD at the desk haha, when I have the hardware I bought brand new last year in the main rig under the tv, otherwise my mind starts going into overdrive and thinking "well you coulda/shoulda bought X gpu/cpu to start with" (which I nearly did but simply didn't need it for what I want/do)

Ah ok, maybe it was fluke on Warzone that I was with all controller players. I know when I played WWII/MW1 remake on PS4 it was grouping us by controller only, as I proved this when I plugged a K+M in at the desk (where the PS4 at the time lived plugged into the hdmi on my monitor for my mac mini at the time) and it put me with only K+M players each match. Maybe it differs on console? As you'd have more than an edge at 60hz on a PS4 with a K+M.

Yeah I know what you mean, when I briefly ran the main rig for a month at the desk and could get what 465fps at 1440p native with the 5700x/4070, it was fun, but after the honeymoon period of like a few days/week, I just went back to playing SP games again, so many hackers/geeks with 540hz 1080p displays spending 8 hours everyday rinsing it and owning you, it becomes a bit pointless.

Hence the **** this why am I sat at a desk with a controller using this nice new 32" 1440 165hz when I've a nice 65" 4K60hz tv 2 metres away and a lazy chair, haha!

Thanks for your input, you seem to get exactly my poor me 1st world problem haha!
My plan is once I've bought another car, next year I'll just chuck the 5700x/32gb ram into the MITX and grab a 6700XT for cheap and bang that in the Ryzentosh MITX and chuck a 5800X3D/64GB ram into the main rig.

The aim assist in MW3 is insane, PC players are constantly being marginalised to the point where practically nobody plays M/K anymore (idle away, visual recoil, general noise etc.)

I think you will get a proper reality check once SBMM will show you the way... COD will never be back to what it used to be, these days the casual player base is all but gone. Only sweats on 20/20 sensitivity and cracked on Redbull and sweets!
Yeah I briefly red there was madness going on with the auto aim etc.

Haha yeah I bet. TBH FWIW I only was considering playing it via the tv/controller on a pc to mask my want for CS2 at the desk, but I refuse to move the main rig under the tv back and forth to the desk just to play it on my 165hz 1440p 32" monitor with a K+M - which for CS2 is the way it should be played, won't ever dispute that, but cod always felt right with a controller, but I am going back to the OG MW1 360 XBL days and then was still good on the PS4 remake and WWII that I briefly played online :)

I'll probably give it a miss for £60 and no alternative key website issuing a key, only 'accounts' to buy...

Thank you to everyone for their input.
