The Wall Street Journal just broke news of a planned Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 "Elite" subscription service which Activision was hoping to keep under wraps until tomorrow morning. This goes against statements from Activision representatives over the past year regarding rumors that Activision was indeed looking to monetize the Call of Duty franchise in such away. From the WSJ:

Consumers are used to paying $60 each for videogames that run on consoles like the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Now the publisher behind the industry's biggest videogame franchise— "Call of Duty"—is about to find out whether it can get them to pay a monthly bill, too.

Activision Blizzard Inc. plans to launch an online service called Call of Duty Elite this fall that will work with the next major edition of the game, "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3," and future installments of the hyper-realistic combat-simulation game. In a move industry executives describe as a first, Activision plans to charge a monthly subscription fee for the service, which will provide extra content that isn't offered on game discs sold in stores, including downloadable map packs that give players new "Call of Duty" levels to play.

Activision executives said they haven't yet figured out how much to charge for the service, but they expect the cost to be less than fees for comparable online-entertainment services, such as a $7.99-a-month Netflix Inc. movie subscription. Portions of the service will be free, including features inspired by Facebook Inc. that will let "Call of Duty" players meet for online gun battles with others who share various affiliations and interests.

Apparently the MP is still 'free' but its said subscribers will gain additional weapons / attachments / perks. As well as detailed in game analysis of their performances such as heat maps and such.

-edit-

Should clarify, the article doesnt say this .. just what jerno's are saying.

... and still muppets will defend it and buy it in droves.

Suppose it boils down to cost. If it was £1 per month and you got the map packs etc (which are usually £11 each min) it would be pretty good value. Above that though it would just screw the customer more than the current system does in the long run.

"Hyper-realistic combat-simulation game." ?! Yeaaaaa riiiiight.

The only thing I think has always been a bad idea, no matter the game is map packs that are MP only and pre-order/special edition/and possibly like this, subscription only.
It's either a clever way to force people to buy it to play with their friends on other maps or a bad way to fragment some of the community. It all depends. But I have a feeling most people won't care.

But it all depends on true information, not that I'll be buying it anyway.

with the next major edition of the game, "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3," and future installments of the hyper-realistic combat-simulation game

LMAO!!

It's the most unrealistic combat simulation game I have ever played.

WSJ just seems to be plain ignorant in this regards or are pure biased:rolleyes:

I remember when additional multiplayer maps used to be free. I think it's disgusting that they started charging a few quid for what are often rehashed older game maps. Now they want to fleece FPS players for a few quid a month just like they do with MMO.

I bet the amount of content will be totally pitiful.

If the maps are only available to Elite subscribers then this'll certainly throw a divide in the community.

Don't they get enough cash already from the yearly COD game and DLC?

Will PC users stand for this? Probably.

I won't be buying it that's for sure.

Honestly I hope MW3 fails, If any COD bombs Activision will be in deep trouble financially, which is a good thing as this is one publisher I wouldn't mind see going under.

This is ridiculous! As if they don't make enough money from folk who play COD within the first few days of release.

We cannot give this sort of thing the light of day.

Stop people in the street like you're that mad nutter with a cardboard sign that says the world will end on the 21st of May, tell them not to buy into this **** or it will become commonplace.

so the people who pay the money may get a few extra guns and perks.

big deal. anyone half decent with a standard unmodified UMP can go and dominate a public match regardless of how overpowered you think akimboshottys/tubes etc are.

having dominant weapons as a paid for option would break the core gameplay. im not saying they wont do it [we know what they are like for making 'bad moves'] but it seems less likely.

The thing is I'm not so sure that this will actually work, many of my mates who only play console games said that they wouldn't buy MW3 if there was any sort of subscription. Now I don't know if that is true or not, and I'm sure that millions of little 12 year olds will still get it, but maybe they will see a fairly large drop in sales. Although it doesn't really matter because gamers get shafted, again......

I love to keep up with news in the gaming world, the rage faces and the tears of joy.

No matter what activision will do or can do, I still won't buy another rendition of Call of Duty.

Modern Warfare was fine enough for me out of the however many hours I got on it.

Roll on BF3...

WoW basically gives them unlimited funds at the moment, surely?

Not necessarily, Vivendi own Activsion and Blizzard with WoW, Vivendi are a ruthless company and won't blink an eye in at knocking one if its publishers on the head if they are not bringing in the cash.
