COD:UO/2 idiots guide to servers

I'm a bit clueless when it comes to servers etc so i'm asking for a bit of help. Does anyone here know of a guide or care to explain in laymans(noob) terms how i can create a server to play my mates over a lan in COD:UO and COD2 and mod it? I can setup a basic server no probs, but applying mods etc i have no idea.
Anyone able to help at all?

Thanks for that, nice and clear
I will primarily be running it from the PC that im playing on, so how do i go about applying mods to the server, like AWE for example?
