CoD: World at War question

Just picked this up for the Xbox360 and it looks like to play online I need to download (and spend more money) on more maps. Is this correct or am I missing something?

You don't have to download any map packs if don't want to.

As above, no need to buy any maps, as they're just extras. Worth it though if you're a big online player.

Gave the online aspect another try and had a better experience. My original post was because I tried playing online and got told 2 or 3 times I needed to buy the extra maps. Enjoying the game but it doesn't feel as complete nice as COD4.
