I used to have that... can't remember how I fixed though... I might have copied my data then reinstalled, or maybe I just patched, can't remember now - so long since I had any trouble with it...
If i remember correctly it's something todo with the sound settings, changing it to CD quality or something,? No doubt someone will confirm shortly
EDIT: Try this
Go to Start then Control Panel
Double click on the Sound Tool
Click on the Recording tab
Right click and select "View Disabled Devices"
Enable the Stereo Mix
i got this, i fixed (first time)it by changing my front panel connection to, disable front panel jack detection in the realtek HD audio manger( you have to press the little folder top right)
but i have had this happen once while in MP, bit annoying , anyone know why it would come back as the above definatly fixed it first time round as it wouldnt even start before that fix
Its usually due to the games badly coded voice stuff... AFAIK you don't need anything plugged into recording/line-in but you do need a recording device enabled and selected in the windows sound control panel.

Got it working now! i just disabled and enabled a few different sound devices as got it working. Ive read its something to do with Realtek onboard sound.
