Got this for xmas and whilst it looks potentially great I can't find out as the piggin game keeps CTD'ing.

Spec as sig
Played demo fine.
Gone thru training and first mission. CTD'd whilst lifting off sinking ship. Everytime I try and resume game it crashes out to desktop just after loading.
Lowered cpu clock
Tried GFX card @ standard clocks = No change.

Had a search here and google, does'nt appear to be a single fix. This is SP im having trouple with and I patched straight to 1.4.
No error messages just bang! CTD.

Consoles are starting to look appealing...............

Just tried replaying the first mission. Rebooted this time in exactly the smae place. Thats on std vid clock and I lowered the CPU clock slightly.
Not random crashing, always in specific load spot.

Feels like BF2 all over again

*sigh*

CTD'ing?

I take it you mean it's crashing on you?

Are all your components clean and dust free? my rig rebooted on me when playing, cleaned all the crap from the graphics card now it's all good.

Have you tried running your hardware at stock speeds to see if it makes any difference?

Presume CTD = Crashing To Desktop?

If it's going in exactly the same place each time then it's unlikely to be hardware instability as this is usually random, although I suppose that one bit could be stressing the graphics hardware or processor to the max, causing it to crash.

I'd suspect a driver issue - try making sure all your graphics & sound drivers are bang up to date.

Give there a try, the top sticky is something about crashing, and i havent actually read it yet but its worth a try.

Edit, just had a glance, maybe this would help a bit?

I get random freezes and crashes while playing COD4
Rivatuner, ATiTool, LCD monitor tools, NTune (NVidia Control Panel) and possibly any other hardware monitoring program installed and running when trying to play COD4 could possibly be the cause.
Either close these applications or uninstall them and the problem should go away.

Tried it again at about 1.30am.......
this time reduced sound quality to low.
on 'resume game' the main title loaded up and this is where it always crashed. going from the cod 4 title into the next mission objective loader.
got part way into mission load when everything froze with a sound lock.

no time for further testing as i lost my saves.
have disabled nvidia and ntune at start and replaced a sound file.
I'll report back if successful.

I'd personally disable the sound card and then try it again if it works (all be it without sound) at least you'll have a starting point.

I'd also remove any overclocking on the system and again try it - if it works fine then do one setting at a time and see where it falls over again you'll have a point of reference then.

Mine kept/keeps crashing as well. Tried the remove ati tool stuff (thanks to punkbuster screwing the system... it should be illegal for it to do that!!!!).

Other was removing PB, reinstalling it and updating to lastest cod4 patch for it.

For the record, in SP it's fine, but in MP it crashes/freezes. It is VERY annoying as it can happen at anytime. Sometimes happens after 1 game, other times after several hours, if at all. Weird.

X-fi disabled - game won't start without it.
X-fi drivers updated - Crash and re-boot.
CPU clock lowered - Crash and re-boot.
Game re-installed minus PB and patch - Crash and re-boot.
Patch 1.4 installed - Crash and re-boot.

Interestingly all crashes are hard ie black screen then re-boot, although last two crashes gave me a BSOD with the windows has shut down blah blah message.

I've now wasted 3hrs of valuable gaming time of which I only get 1 or 2 times a week.

Have'nt yet updated vid card drivers which is next step but I can't be arsed to waste another 1/2 hour right now.

Any offers on my pc with monitor (minus hard drives) ???
(spex below).

Im really feeling like flogging this machine, getting a Dell cheapo for net browsing and never gaming again. Spend the profits on R/C gliders which is infinitly more enjoyable and healthier:(

p.s

crashes are all still in sp.
all just after the first mission - title splash then you get the intel brief about next missin with sat pix zooming in. always seems to crash a bit later every attempt but nonetheless crash it does. Most reliable game I ever played!

Strange mp works (although without pb).

would anyone be kind enough to state where pb is located etc in the Activision folder? there is'nt an install pb option if you choose not to bother with it on initial install.
i can easily extract from the disk.

Well I never....................

Updated vid driver and now it works:)
Never had a game so catastrophically crash at such a regular spot due to video drivers.

So if anyone was mulling over the offer of buying my rig (above posts),
tough!
Im keeping it now.

I hate it though when a game casts doubts over your system stability and overclocking prowess. Now I can crank up the clock speeds and get fragging again:D

p.s
any one like to tell me where pb lives in the activision folder?
as i said, i've not installed pb for fault finding purposes and unfortunately the disk does'nt give you the chance to do it later. I'll have to do it manually as i don't want to play on no steeeeeenkin' non pb cheatin' servers:p

COD 4 much as i love it, it uses punkbuster and that causes my PC hassle.
Unless I close the PnkBstrA.exe and PnkBstrB.exe processes in task manager, and close ATI tool before i play, it locks up!

If your on XP then its "C:\Program Files\Activision\Call of Duty 4 - Modern Warfare\pb" by default.
