Hey I'm running Vista 64 on an 8800GTX, Q6600 and 4GB ram.
I have some friends who use XP on a core 2 duo and an 8800GT who have around the same FPS or more than me on the same settings that I use. Also my FPS tends to fluctuate between 60 and 100 FPS quite a bit; and when walking in smoke it drops to 30 FPS. I'm wondering is this normal? Is it Vista's performance problem?

My friends keep rubbing it in my face that their less expensive card gets better framerates :p So I'm just trying to find out if it's normal. Also, 30FPS in smoke - there must be a problem somewhere?

Something maybe wrong, as with a slightly overclocked 1950xtx, my min is low 30s with 1280x1024 everything maxed 4AA 16AF. I though a 8800GTX had far more power???

Something maybe wrong because he's getting 30FPS in smoke? Are you freaking kidding me? Everyone lags when there's a lot of that kinda stuff on the screen... Especially smoke.. My PC does it aswell. It even does it in WoW if I go right up to a flame or something and focus on it...

Nvidia cards have had a massive problem with smoke when AA is enabled for a long time - even as far back as the gf4 series, I remember having to disable smoke in Need for Speed Underground if AA was enabled.

Smoke will kill anything, esepically in Call of Duty games. I've got an FPS config to play Call of Duty 4 (don't ask, my specs, I know), and it will drop to around 50fps in the smoke.

Set your AA to application controlled in the NV control panel and to x4 in-game, that helped me out massively, also turn on dual cards in-game and see if that makes a positive difference. Mine runs lovely at 1920x1200 even in smoke???

yep setting dual video cards makes a big difference for me.
it's jerky as hell without this turned on.
my guess is it turns on triple buffering when you also have vsync enabled?
