Tried uninstalling sound drivers and still no luck? This seems to be a typical issue but i have no idea who to fix it :mad:

Running Cat's 8.9 and COD1.7

I got this on my dads machine, and i never did find a fix for it. He had a 3200+ based system with a 6800GT card and onboard sound.

Updating sound, vga and direct X drivers had no effect
 
I started receiving this error after upgrading to the Catalyst 8.9 drivers for my 4870X2.

The only way I can get the game to run is rather than double clicking on the icon on the screen, I took the CD in and out of the CD drive and then launched the single player game from the CD menu.

this is what worked for me, go control panel and then sounds, then in the recording menu (i think :) right click on the list of stuff and put show disabled items and make sure stereo mix is enabled. That is all i had to do when mine wasnt working under vista
 
have you got it running as admin ? select to always run as admin.

My Father had the same issue as you,i sent him my PB folder from activision and it fixed the problem.
 
i got this recently for no apparent reason as i hadn't changed anything and it had worked fine since launch. just got a new soundcard and installed new drivers of course and it seems to have gone away thankfully

I'm thinking of formatting - just started getting this problem with the rampage formula after upgrading from a P5K Premium.
 
I had this error too ..... most frustrating.

I resolved it by finding out my issue was caused by me filtering servers in a zombie mod that I had been playing. Every time I wanted to look for regular servers the game would crash with this error.
I rectified this issue by loading up the mod and removing the filters I had applied whilst playing the mod.

Ur and effin legend, this has been drivin me round the bend, it coincided with me installing the 186.08 betas and playing paintball. As I could connect to a server through xfire I knew it couldnt be a driver problem so has to be in CoD4...only what.
