CoD4 keeps crashing

So I finally got my hands on CoD4 today, but it's not going well so far. It's consistently crashing at the end of the mission that was in the demo - where you have to rescue the stranded tank and defend it, three or four missions into Act I. I finish the mission, get debriefed, and the screen fades to black to load the next mission, I get the load mission initial screen, then it just dies and I'm left staring at my desktop in puzzlement. Played the mission through again, but that doesn't help, and I've went to the 'Select Mission' menu and tried to get straight to the next one that way, but it crashes there too.

Patched up to 1.4, and I'm all out of ideas. I'm going to give the multiplayer a shot later (if I can stand the humiliation of being an utter n00b and getting slaughtered by the hardcore players for a while til I find my feet...and to think I used to be a 2nd in command of a CoD clan) but I'd still really like to play the SP mode too. :)

Thanks in advance
tTz

PS: Oh, it's running on a C2D 2180 @ stock and an HD 2900 Pro, also at stock, with 2Gb RAM and plenty of free hard drive space etc.

Mine crashes just after you do the initial range bit at the very beginning! My system just switches of..... Any ideas? Also patched and unpatched games do this.

Nothing? I've also tried selecting the mission manually on various different difficulty settings, but it still crashes every time. Multiplayer is fine though, and I'm proud that my level 5 Lance-Corporal (or whatever I am) managed to beat lots of level 20s and a few 55s yesterday. So what if it was pure luck? :p

Anyways, I think I might have to dig up some cheats and cheat past this next mission. I don't know if there are any cheats or not, but I'll scour the internet and see. Any other advice would be much appreciated though. :)

Ooh, a post has been posted while I was typing. Interesting that it's not just me, then. I was beginning to think there was something tragically wrong with my computer. It wouldn't have been the first time...

Do you have to take the kettle lead out of the PSU, and put it back in before it will power back up again after it switches off, if so thats a PSU problem, your system needs more power than the PSU can supply, so once its supplied all it can, it just goes off, time for a new one.

Mind you im suprised though, as that PSU should easily power an x1900, unless its faulty, or on its way out.

Multiplayer has now started crashing for me...hoping that a restart will fix that and that it's just a one-off, but I'm in the middle of sending a demo track to someone, and then I'm going out, so I'll have to check it again later. :(

Oh, and I'm on a 480W PSU that's managing to power a C2D and an HD2900 Pro, so a 550W PSU should power mildot's X1900 pretty easily. Unless his hard drives draw a hell of a lot of power, or something, but I doubt it. I'll let someone else confirm/deny that, I'm not too knowledgeable on these things. :)

I haven't, though I believe I'm running the latest Catalysts...I'll maybe try an older set, that never even occurred to me. :)

Nope i just have to press the start button! not comps not even overclocked like i used to have it. i have downloade the latest ati drivers and that doesnt help. Ive reformatted computer and that doesnt help. Ive run the game on it default crap setting and guess what? that doesnt help! lol

Im going mad! my medal of honour airbourne also shuts comp down!

Its more likely to be memory error related or possibly power supply.

I would hazard a guess its your memory though, download memtest and run a cycle.

http://hcidesign.com/memtest/

That version will find the slightest error with your memory, if you can run that your memory is perfectly fine and then you can move on to other diagnostics

I tried running a different set of Catalysts, but no go. The multiplayer is back to working fine again - it either doesn't like a specific map, or it was just the PC acting up like it sometimes does. On the plus side, I think I've just unlocked a red-dot sight for my M16, which I'm sure I won't even use, but I gain a small amount of bragging rights. :)
