COD4 keeps randomly crashing?

Hi,

I am getting problems with my COD4, every now and again I get a crash where the game freezes and after about a second the screen goes black, while black I can still here the in-game sounds, then after a few seconds on the black screen the game reappears for 1 second again and then back to the black screen again this repeats it self over and over until eventually I get a BSOD, then the system restarts after the memory has been dumped.

Now I have un-installed the Graphic drivers, rebooted and then installed the latest drivers and rebooted again. Loaded the game up joined a server and eventually I get the same thing happening.
Now the crashes seem to be random as far as I can see, but tonight I as I got a black screen I did the Ctrl+Alt+Delete and opened the taskbar and I got a pop up window (bottom right) saying something similar to this "the nvlddmkm display driver crashed and recovered.
So can anyone help please?

Shh.. you can't say that Nvidia cards cause crashes, whatever will people think! :p

Seriously, can you run some utilities to check temperatures on your gfx card and CPU?

Coretemp for the CPU and GPU-Z for the graphics card should do it.

also try running ATItool for awhile and see if you get any artifacts detected or see any "yellow spots"

I'm getting a similar situation, but with my "First" ATI card.

I was getting lots of these when I went up to the 8.7 drivers, I have now uninstalled these drivers and gone back to the hotfix 8.6 for my 4870. This doesn't happen anymore, hopefully ATI will get their gear together and sort out the next drivers !!

Thanks for the replies, I have attached an img of GPU-Z, my system has been on for about 10 mins.

So is it overheating?
and if so how do I increase the fan percentage to 100% instead of 60% ?
and will this help?

Thanks
Danny

Also as I was writing this post the GPU temp (the one under the memory clock one raised to 70`c

I had the exact same issue as you with my 9800GTX. Turned out to be the card overheating, works fine when I turn the fan up. Hopefully this works for you too.

Yea those temps seem really hot for you running 60 percent fan speed. Have you checked to see if the fan and heat sinks have a lot of dust in them. If not then give the card a good clean out see if that makes any difference.

I found a few issues with cod 4, lagging and crashing a lot. I have cod 4 on steam and if i play tf2 before i play cod 4 cod 4 lags so bad its unplayable. Also if you have xfire try closing it.

But as others have said the temps do seem high.

seems fan speed is at 100% according to gpu-z. defo too hot and overheating think that is your problem, my bfg 8800gtx never went above 85*c
