COD4 PS3 disc cracked

My mates COD4 PS3 disc has a crack from the centre going slightly into the shiney silver data bit.

When we did multiplayer mode, it always freezes on the loading screen, but couldn't figure out why. And one day while cleaning the the disc he discovered the crack. Though it worked fine playing online single player.

How did the disc crack? He only has 2 games and its rarely come out of the PS3 :confused:

PS3 is about 6 months old.
 
Probably taking it in and out of the case, my MGS2:Substance DVD has about 6 little cracks on the inner circle, some of those disc holders are way too tight.

Best bet is look in the back of the game manual to see if Activision offer some sort of disc replacement service. Normally it will involve you returning the damaged media and them sending a a new disc. In the past companies did this for about a tenner, no idea which publishers do this now (I know MS do it for free for their games, but that's cos their consoles scratch *** disc in the 1st place!!)

It deffo won't be free from a 3rd party publisher, but will be a reduced cost.

As to how it happened....pass
I have never heard of a optical ROM drive actually cracking a disc.
