COD4 Visual settings

Hi Folks,

I've only recently got a PC good enough to play some COD4 and have been mostly been playing it online. I am currently at level 52 but am getting a bit peeved at how easy some people can kill me because they can see me and I can't see them.

I am currently running the game at 1680x1050 and everything is as set to as high as possible. I have set my fov to 80 and have my max fps at a steady 125 but I want to turn down the settings a bit so I can compete against others who have done the same.

Can you recommend and of the settings that I should reduce so it's easier for me to see people? I don't want to compromise too much on the graphics so I want to find a middle ground. Is there any good webites that explain the effects of the settings?

i get the same sort of thing
The higher end graphics jsut seem to distract things and cover up players more
higher gfx including depth of field is probably best left in single player

Be warned this config strips the eye candy down to the bare minimum, performance in MP gaming is what its all about.

some servers will punt for draw decals 0 thats why i dont use that, my config posted above hasnt caused any probs in any servers or tourneys ive played.

You can also try he site of most of the pro clans as they make their configs available for download.
 
Turning off Depth of Field, should stop the rest of the screen blurring, making it easier to see.

After messing around with some settings, trying the above config etc I have decided just to turn on all the eye candy again and just turn of depth of field. I can't justify having spent loads on a decent PC to turn all the settings down so it looks rubbish. I didn't really find it that much easier with the settings down either.
 
You probably just need the learn the maps a bit more. I can't imagine there being much of a advantage on low (apart from DoF).

Even if it did make a difference, I would never sacrifice atmosphere for a few extra kills. Some people take online gaming way too seriously.
 
not many kick for the decals at 0 only a few silly servers out of 20000.

some of these configs do make a big difference and if you dont try them you dont know what your missing.if you play often enough you can feel even if your ping is a little higher or something very slight is off with out looking at settings.

high fps is a must


you know its right when you sprint it should feel like its skating on ice.

I'm saddened by all you people :(

Just play the game the developers meant it, and be grateful you can. Pumping out 120fps instead of 100 won't make any difference really. And in 'pro' gaming, even though its not, I feel that you should be forced to run the game at full settings. Having no dust , lighting and particle effects is almost like cheating, it ruins the atmosphere! Otherwise you may as well play UT3 or Quake.
 
^^ You try playing competitively on Vacant with glow + stuff turned on, you can barely see outside.

I play with everything on high up until something disadvantages me.

I had the same discussion with someone about BF2 a few months back. They showed me an image of their tweaked BF2, no shadows, no AA (this had some advantage apparently), textures on low (to see models easier) etc. It looked hideous. The problem is as I see it, when I play a game and I expect to be able to hide in a shadow only to find out that anyone who wants an advantage can turn them off then it seriously pulls me out of the experience. People are deliberately degrading their experience of the game for a few extra kills. The world that I thought was so vast, detailed and varied turns out to be as bland as the player stalking me on low settings.

But whatever floats your boat I suppose, I still hold my own even with these huge graphical hindrances :rolleyes:

The problem I had was that when I die and I watch the kill cam I see people shooting me when they can't even see me. A good example is on downpour and they are prone in the long grass. I just assumed that by turning the graphical levels down it would remove some of the grass and so make it easier to see other people.
 
on some maps with right configs they look better not worse .i am speaking from my own experience i dont play in black and white : also promod in my opinion makes it look better on some maps and runs how it should in the first place , silky smooth.the aiming is proper on it and numerous other things.
