Codec Packs - Help Needed

PC spec. added at end (thanks for pointing out that I missed this off)

Since getting a new PC (Windows 7) many of my video files stutter and stammer (so to speak), and don't play smoothly. Currently I have the Windows 7 Codec Pack installed, as well as the latest DivX. Generally, I use Media Player Classic or VLC Player. If anyone knows of a kind of miracle codec solution I would be forever indebted to them. Thanks for reading this post.

PC is a basic OcUK Titan with a few improvements inc. AMD Dual 3.00 GHz, 8.00 GB RAM (1600MHz), 2TB Hard Drive

My old PC did play all of these files fine, so I doubt it is the spec. - However, that machine went kaput, so I can't find out what I had on it (whatever it was that I don't have on this one)

Thanks for that (a while ago, I know).
Although far from an expert, I prefer to have a go at a possible solution that is quite tricky than have a massive list of useless non-solutions that are no-brainers.
So your tweeks were (and are) very much appreciated.
