[01:57] <Dfhaii> INTERLACING is the use of two half-frames (fields) instead of one whole frame. The two fields are shown at a slight time difference and in a way so line 1,3,5... is from the first field and line 2,4,6... is from the second. Most TV’s will show the picture this way, first field 1 then field 2. Computer monitors on the other hand will show both fields at once, so some form of deinterlacing must be used on interlaced material.

dont really like deinterlacing if you mean doing it as a process then saving the video file much better to leave an interlaced source interlaced

in my experience doing it by deinterlacing as a pre final video process leads to a less smooth video

yeah but it will reduce the smoothness of the video.
pal interlaced equates to 50fps (2 alternating lines each slightly different)
each frame is made up of the 2 lines shown at slightly different times giving a more fluid movement.

when you deinterlace you either throw away half the information or combine it but either way it reduces down to 25fps

25fps is supposed to be the rate at which the eye percieves movement but you will notice the difference in fluidity if you compare the two.
if your final target is say a dvd player and tv youd be best to leave the source interlaced

im by no expert in video by any means but this is from personal experience, i await the arrival of some of the pros to the topic!

/edit the lines will not appear when shown on a tv / dvd combo apart from pause
