codecs - where?

just ffdshow has never failed me, allthough certain 350mb long xvid files always seem to be a bit choppy at times, VLC runs them smoothly.

Which got named QT lite since QT ALT LITE is the same thing except only called that in older versions..

In 1.9.x versions it was called Quicktime Alternative, there was a lite version too (which I had).
Somewhere in between then and now development stopped for whatever reason and someone else took over the project and called it QTAlt/QTLite - again the only difference being Lite = no bundled MPC.

That's what I can see fromm looking at the QTLITE website in relation to older versions on free-codecs.com

They all do the exact same thing except newer versions have better SSE/CPU support and also have updated Quicktime libraries.

FFDshow does what CoreAVC does (super fast H264 decoding with minimal CPU usage even at 1080p) but for FREE thank you very much.

Odd, when decoding x264 FFDShow cripples my data machine (opteron 165) doing 1080p, CoreAVC runs smoothly.

Perhaps it's a setting somewhere or the player you're using in relation to that codec? I kow for fact FFDSHOW decoder works flawlessly in WMP for example and uses the FFDSHOW decoder but load it in MPC and it tries to use the Quicktime official decoder which is slow. You have to change the file extension to .hdmov for MPC to decode using the FFDSHOW decoder.

Not an issue since the .mov downloader in QTLITE renames them automagically.

CoreAVC>FFDSHOW

Depends what for.

CoreAVC is very good for fast decoding but cuts corners to do it so some very high bit rate and a minority of other video files won't play properly....the FFDShow codec does things 'properly' so it uses higher CPU but you won't run in to issues.

If you have a fast PC there's absolutely no reason to use CoreAVC, though it is great for single core machines (I couldn't play stuff smoothly with my Athlon XP with FFDShow but could with CoreAVC)

As for the OP, I use FFDShow Tryouts, Real Alternative, QT Alternative, Nero Decoder (specifically for EAC3 support) and sometimes AC3Filter. All with Media Player Classic.

Yep MPCHC with modified keys and various other setting changes just to make is suitable for usage with wireless keyboard and bluetooth phone :D

The AC3 ACM filter is a must because I have videos which are DIVX but audio in AC3 and my DVD recorder downstairs plays DIVX but does not support embedded AC3 streams so I convert them to LAME-MP3 in Virtualdub which needs the ACM filter installed to decode the AC3 stream - that's the only reason for me really!
