I have got hold of some .mpg files that won't play on any of my PCs. Since they all do exactly the same things (crash WMP 9, corrupt display on WMP 10), I'm guessing it's a codec issue.

How do I find out what codec(s) I need to play back the files?

PS - before anyone suggests one of those all-in-one codec packages, I don't want to go there. I've had bad things happen after installing those.

Try downloading VLC. I use it for watching everything on my PC, it doesn't need any codecs installed and is a very useful program:)

VLC

Or.. Try AVI Codec, its another useful program that analyses files and will show you the codec used..

AVI Codec

VLC got the job done.

Thanks.

(and I noted the Mac OS X version as well, that'll get downloaded soon)
